Further to the Frey-up

Though so far there’s been no comment from Frey’s agent, Kassie Evashevski (who, somewhat curiously, is a film agent with very few book clients, only Frey and David Rees according to a Publishers Marketplace deal search) nor from his editor, Riverhead’s Sean McDonald, blogosphere commentary has been lively, plentiful and varied.

MBToolbox’s Claire Zulkey, who was quoted in the TSG piece, muses on the irony of actually being in closer proximity to Frey and JT Leroy in spite of their hoaxster tendencies: ” The curious thing is that while I typically conduct most interviews via email, which is an easy way to fake somebody out, I spoke with Leroy on the phone and eventually met Frey in real life (where he gave me a nice hug and the best book inscription I’ve ever received.) Not that those are evidence for or against their various cases (if you can call them that), but I just found it interesting that I got closer to them than I usually do with my interviewees.”

Over at Bookgasm, the tenor is definitely more ho-hum, as they wondered “how someone with blood, urine and vomit all over them would be allowed on a commercial flight.” No kidding.

And the blogger “Grown up Sarah” states the obvious, but rather forcefully: “If you’ve got a great narrative that your life just doesn’t fit…why not just write a novel? And you could even call it a “semi-autobiographical novel,” if that helps you out. Because, you know, novels don’t have to be true! And why lie about things that are so obviously detectable, things that are public record (like arrests and jail time) or part of the public conscience of a whole small town (like his bad-ass reputation as a youth and the car crash of his alleged sweetheart). It’s just stupid (and immoral and kinda creepy).”

Simple: just because the public records are out there, doesn’t mean people are going to have the time or the inclination to sift through them.
