GalleyCat Dogs Eschew Poker for Literature

Grand Central senior publicist Susan Richman passes along a photo from one of David Rosenfelt‘s fans of an unnamed golden retriever reading Play Dead, in which his attorney protagonist, Andy Carpenter, takes on a golden as a client and learns it may be the only witness to an unsolved murder. Rosenfelt’s serious about his golden retrievers; through the Tara Foundation (which is also the name of the canine rescue operation Andy runs in the series), he and his wife have found homes for 4,000 dogs, including 37 that live with them in their Southern California home. “Please note that the book isn’t dog-eared but the fan is,” Richman quips.

Jason Pinter sent us a photo of Wilson, his nine-month-old Shih Tzu, guarding copies of his debut novel, The Mark. “The only hope of passing Wilson is by distracting him with a body part from one of his numerous victims,” Pinter warns—but then he concedes that, yes, the dog’s half asleep on the job, and, really, “he pretty much just licks anyone who comes close, and he can be distracted by pretty much anything (he has a particular fondness for ice cubes).”
