Jughead’s “New” Look Still Beanie-Centric

Has it really only been a year since Archie Comics revamped Betty and Veronica? Well, they’re at it again, and this time it’s Jughead who’ll be sporting the “dynamic new look…in a story that will shock you.” (Kevin Melrose is unimpressed, describing the new wardrobe as ““Lollapalooza ‘97 attendee.”)
Artwork for the four-part series will be done by Joe Staton, a fan favorite on superhero titles at various companies during the 1970s and ’80s, and though the press release doesn’t make a big deal about it, at least the covers are being inked by Al Milgrom, who was a fixture at Marvel Comics in the ’80s. Based on those covers, the “shock” value appears to derive from Jughead entering into a relationship with a girl other than “Big Ethel” that doesn’t center around hamburgers, which has happened before, but far enough in the past that kids reading the comic today will have no recollection of it.
