NYT Chips at Clapton Embargo

pattieboyd-ericclapton.jpgAs a brief aside during her NYT review of Pattie Boyd‘s memoir, Monday morning book critic Janet Maslin lets slip the tiniest of details from Eric Clapton‘s memoir, which Broadway has scheduled for later this year and has slapped under embargo:

“Ms. Boyd also says that Mr. Clapton told her he would begin using heroin if she wouldn’t leave [George Harrison] for him, and that he made good on that threat. Mr. Clapton… sees the heroin issue a little differently: He says he was already fully addicted. But he basically shares her idea of their grand passion.”

They also, Maslin implies, agree on what happened to that grand passion once they finally hooked up. Now it’s a matter of waiting to see whether any other outlets will further resist the media blackout on Clapton’s memoirs. It’s not as if the book contains any genuine surprises, after all. (Well, okay, I found one, but it has nothing to do with any of the story elements that’ll be driving boomers to pick the memoir up…)
