NYT Public Editor Responds to Andrew Goldman’s Twitter Comments To Jennifer Weiner

The New York Times public editor Margaret Sullivan has examined writer Andrew Goldman‘s Twitter comments to novelist Jennifer Weiner after she criticized his interview work at The New York Times Magazine.

You can read our complete story about the Twitter exchange here. Goldman has since apologized to Weiner and his account has been removed from Twitter.

UPDATE: Sullivan’s post has spawned a mountain of commentary, most of them linking to our Storify record of the complete Twitter exchange (embedded below). Some links, via the Morning Media NewsfeedPoynter / MediaWireNew York Observer, JezebelGawker, and Capital New York.

Sullivan wrote a long piece about the debate, including an interview from NYT Magazine editor Hugo Lindgren. Here is an excerpt from Lindgren’s interview: ”I made it clear to [Goldman] that kind of behavior he exhibited in this Twitter exchange would not be tolerated, and he was contrite and accepted that without argument. My feeling is that he had an unfortunate outburst, and that he will learn from it. He works very hard on these interviews and does a good job. Readers are entitled to whatever opinions they have of his work, and he needs to be comfortable with that and engage thoughtfully when appropriate, or not at all.” (Via Edward Champion)
