October Book Sales Show a 2.1% Uptick

Friday morning, I told you how bookstore sales were up 8 percent in October, but only up 0.3 percent for the year-to-date. The Association of American Publishers released its October data for all book sales this morning, showing a 2.1 percent increase in October, with a 9.3 percent increase for the first ten months of 2007.

The big winners in October? Adult hardcover fiction was up 9.7 percent, ebooks up 23.5 percent, and university press hardcovers up 24.5 percent. On the other hand, adult mass market sales declined 18.1 percent, and audiobooks were down 17.5 pecent as well. Children’s and YA hardcovers and paperbacks dropped 1.5 percent and 5.2 percent, respectively, but I wouldn’t be surprised if those tick back up at the end of the year—
