President Barack Obama Promotes Writers in Back to School Speech

obama_portrait_146px.jpgAs President Barack Obama delivers his back to school address to schoolchildren around the country today, GalleyCat spotted a encouraging secret message embedded in the text. His speech will explore all the different vocations possible in the 21st Century, but our president placed writers on the top of the job list.

Here’s the key passage, via a the Huffington Post‘s advance copy: “Every single one of you has something you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide. Maybe you could be a good writer–maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper–but you might not know it until you write a paper for your English class.”

The speech goes on to list a host of professions after President Obama’s tribute to writers: “innovator or an inventor,” “Senator or a Supreme Court Justice,” and finally, the traditional favorites, “doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer.” But, as this GalleyCat writer types with pride, writers topped the list–possibly easing fears about the future of education.
