Scene @ Emerging Leaders Night out
Neither Ron nor I could attend the 2nd Emerging Leaders’ Night Out party – held every quarter as a means of bridging booksellers and publishers in one big party atmosphere – GalleyCat did have a spy in attendance who had a very good time at Union Hall last Thursday and brings back this report:
Whether it was pre-Frankfurt Book Fair overload or just too much Fashion Week, the publishing industry’s Emerging Leaders’ Night Out was not chock-a-block with young Maxwell Perkins‘s or Andrew Wylies, as much as it was a chummy collection of (mostly Park Slope-local?) meet-n-greeters. Still, a good, collegial time was had by most who came out in the drizzle to the library-themed bar/ bocce court, Union Hall.Rockstar publisher Johnny Temple of Akashic Books was in attendance, as well as A Public Space editor/McNally Robinson bookseller Tom Roberge. Major label editorial and agent types also represented, including newly-minted Holt Senior Editor David Patterson (ex-Public Affairs) and William Morris wunderkind Charlotte Wasserstein. Talk seemed to be mostly speculation about potential hot books for Frankfurt; whether Anna Houghteling could be the new Marisha Pessl; and who’s read the hot memoir out from Binky Urban. And so, like sands through the hourglass, these are the days of our lives….
