School Librarians Continue to Shield Teens from Imaginary Babydykes

You might remember last month’s item about an Oklahoma mother’s efforts to remove The Bermudez Triangle from her daughter’s middle school library, based on her belief that Maureen Johnson (left) was promoting all sorts of immorality by having two teenage girls kiss each other. There’s good news and bad news: the YA novel will remain in circulation, but only in a collection of restricted materials that will require parental permission before students can check them out, apparently with the idea that they would only be available for fulfilling class assignments rather than free reading.

Johnson shares more of the bizarre backstory on her blog, including the news that a librarian who defended the book’s inclusion in the main collection was removed from her place on the library committee, and another librarian has resigned over the way the school handled the situation.
