Charlie & The Chocolate Factory Turns 50

2224_IMAGE_0*650,0,347x347,1Roald Dahl‘s classic children’s book Charlie & The Chocolate Factory turns 50 this year. To commemorate the occasion, Penguin Young Readers has released a new paperback edition of the novel and is running its own golden ticket sweepstakes.

Five young readers will win a trip to New York City and a VIP experience at Dylan’s Candy Bar. In addition, winners will get a year’s supply of chocolate, a library of Dahl books and tickets to see Matilda the Musical. Follow this link to enter the contest. Penguin Young Readers will donate money and a book to the nonprofit First Book for every entry they receive.

To help build up enthusiasm, the publisher  hosted a party at Dylan’s Candy Bar in New York back in April. The springtime fete brought out the likes of Roald Dahl’s grandson Luke Kelly, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and  Joseph Schindelman, the original illustrator of the book.

Kate Winslet Lands Book Deal for Photo Book about Golden Hat

Actress Kate Winslet has inked a book deal with Simon & Schuster to publish The Golden Hat, a collection of photos of celebrities wearing a special hat to promote autism awareness.

Winslet (featured in The Reader trailer embedded above) has arranged many celebrity appearances, including: Anna Wintour, Kevin Bacon, Meryl Streep, and Jude Law. Creative Artists Agency negotiated the deal with publisher Jonathan Karp, and senior editor Kerri Kolen. The book will come out in November 2011.

Here’s more about the book: “Winslet has amassed a collection of photos from an amazing array of her friends and renowned personalities who have donned this special hat, taken a self portrait, and passed the hat along from one person to another … Winslet found inspiration for this project in her friends Margret Dagmar Ericsdottir and Ericsdottir’s son Keli, who lives with a severe form of non-verbal autism … Despite hardship, Keli now composes beautiful and deeply moving poetry. One of the poems, among the many included in the book, is called ‘The Golden Hat,’ which describes a magical hat that enables an autistic boy to communicate.”

Former Collins President Switches to Blogging

huffpologo.jpgSteve Ross, the former president of president of HarperCollins’ now shuttered Collins Division, has found a new calling as a regular blogger at The Huffington Post. It’s been a literary week at HuffPo–Arianna Huffington just announced that she will lead a book club and launch a books section on her popular website.

Ross earned his creative writing MFA at New York University, and tested his writing chops with a piece of black comedy. Out of all the topics this award-winning editor and publisher could choose for his first post, Ross wrote about fashion. His satirical piece looks at New York City’s Fashion Week during a recession that has hobbled every industry, from fashion to publishing.

Here’s on fantastical riff from his inaugural post: “In keeping with the theme of this season’s [Fasihon] Expo — ‘Donations: Past and Present’ — the audience of fashionistas and former financiers paid tribute to this year’s movers and shakers in Downturn Fashion. Anna Wintour, her sunglasses dangling a Duane Reade price tag, welcomed Ben Bernanke, who brandished a bandolier of bailout funds strewn in an X across his hirsute chest.”
