I loved how Publishers Marketplace described this particular news story: "news is slow, let's write about Jamie!" even though it led me to believe initially that this would be yet another puff piece about his sordid, wicked wicked days. Ah, no. Instead, Canongate - the company Jamie Byng bought, then made more profitable - will be reshuffled thanks to managing director David Graham's exit last month to join Granta Books.
So the end result is that Byng takes over Graham's position - in addition to being the publisher - and he's persuaded Anya Serota to leave rival John Murray (where she was senior editor and publisher at for three and a half years) to take up the newly created position of editorial director, effective November. The move allows Byng to step back from buying books and dealing with agents to concentrate on running Canongate.
In a statement Saturday night, Serota said: "I have had a wonderful time at John Murray, working with a terrific group of people. But I simply could not refuse this opportunity. Canongate's list of writers, and the passion, flair and creativity with which the team publishes, make it one of the most dynamic publishing houses around. I am delighted to be joining the company and look forward to helping build on its many successes."
