CBS Befriends "Lonelygirl15" Creators

CBS has hooked up with EQAL, the folks behind the Web craze "Lonelygirl15" on a multiplatform content deal. The non-exclusive arrangement gives CBS first dibs on new EQAL productions that it can use on TV, online and on mobiles, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Also, EQAL can work with CBS producers to extend their TV series to the Internet and/or mobile.

"This is a huge opportunity for us. It's incredibly exciting how you can take existing TV, make it interactive and create communities around it," EQAL CEO Miles Beckett said in the report.

Plus, O2 customers who buy a new Samsung Soul or J700 phone will get eight Indiana Jones wallpapers and four True Tones for free, 3G.co.uk reports. As if that weren't enough of the adventure hero, the Soul also comes embedded with an Indiana Jones demo game for O2 Pay Monthly customers.

Mobiles Catching "Saturday Night Fever"?

It's time to dig out those old disco tunes and the white polyester suit. Mobile content aggregator Player X has reportedly hooked up with Paramount Pictures to resurrect the '70s classic flick "Saturday Night Fever." Sort of.

According to a report in The Inquirer out of the UK, Player X got the rights to develop a mobile "Saturday Night Fever" game and create a "Retrosode," a three-minute video clip of the movie.

Other movies said to be covered under the deal include "Top Gun" and "Zoolander."

The new service will let readers buy products, request samples, enter contests and more simply by texting to the short code on the page.

Collegiate Recreational Sports Go Mobile

Hothand Wireless, which bills itself as a mobile gateway for college communication, announced a launch partnership deal with the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association, a resource for professional/student development, education and research in collegiate recreational sports that reaches 820 colleges and 5.5 million students nationwide.

The company said that they will power a menu-driven mobile Web application that for the first time allows students and others to access recreation and intramural information on Web-enabled phones and other wireless devices, regardless of carrier. Consumers can opt-in to receive text message alerts from recreation and intramural staff.

Hothand Wireless provides rich content to consumers through a proprietary, menu-driven mobile gateway.

Fremantle Ditches Direct Mobile Video Deals

MocoNews is reporting that FremantleMedia has ditched the direct distribution deals it set up with wireless operators to deliver its programming on-demand to mobile users. Shows involved include "The Apprentice," "Pop Idol" and "X Factor."

Fremantle reportedly made the move for a darn good reason - it wasn't making any money, despite having tried both ad-funded and for-pay models. It's not giving up on mobile completely, though it will depend on third parties to make their own distribution agreements.

Wizzard Deals for Music, Latino, Movie & Anything Goes Podcasts

watching phone jiu.jpgPodcast network Wizzard Media has inked a series of deals that give it all sorts of new goodies to distribute so content junkies can download the podcasts to their iPods, iPhones and other portable gizmos.

First up is a global distribution agreement with indie label iRecords for music videos and music-related content like behind-the-scenes footage, interviews and live performances. Wizzard gets content from both established and up-and-coming artists covering all music genres.

Next comes a partnership with eLatino Weekly, a free Latino-centric entertainment and current affairs publication. The deal calls for Wizzard to distribute video from eLatinoWeekly.com across its network, supported by advertisers and sponsorships. Wizzard will also provide marketing support to grow the audience for the video podcast.

Then there's a hookup with new content provider Auliese Media, which specializes in "short-burst, high-quality video entertainment." Its library of "personality, story and event-driven" content includes "Tattoo Generation," "Cop Stories" and "Things that Go Boom," with the latter focusing on what happens when "high-powered rifles, hot chicks and helpless items collide."

Finally is Wizzard's agreement with Fishman Productions to distribute film and TV projects through its digital syndication network. Fishman, the company behind the 2002 award-winning short "Getting Out," will get its own branded channel on the Wizzard Media Network.

Time Unveils Site for iPhone Users

Time magazine has developed a version of its Time.com Web site just for iPhone and iPod touch users. According to Mobile Marketer, the new mobile site was designed to provide "a rich visual experience - sliding pages, expanding images - along with access to the latest news, analysis and photography from the site."

Time_mobile.gifThe ad-supported site, powered by Crisp Wireless, takes advantage of the "sliding" feature of the Apple browser, which lets users slide between pages instead of having to wait for the browser to refresh. The new site also makes it easier, and more comfortable, for users to read longer articles that are often deemed unreadable on a phone's small screen.

Readers who visit www.time.com from their iPhone or iPod touch browser will automatically be sent to the new site.

CBS Eyes Mobile Citizen Journalism

CBS is expanding into mobile citizen journalism. The network has launched CBS iMobile, a Web site where newshounds can upload photos and videos from their camera phones.

Although the Web site is live, MocoNews reports that it seems to only work with Verizon Wireless phones so far. Hopefully that will change by the time CBS actually promotes the service. According to the article, CBS iMobile had a quiet launch during CTIA and the network is expected to start publicizing it as early as this week.
