Will the Real Acer Aspire One D250 Please Stand-up?

Why can't computer manufacturers create and use consistent and simple to remember model names? Apple starts off on the right track (iMac, MacBook) but then loses most people by naming generations of computers with the same name and vastly different configurations. Acer also started out well by naming their netbooks the Asprire One. It is a nice easy to remember name. Then, it ruined it by adding unmemorable model numbers. Quite frankly, I have no idea what it is doing with this model reviewed by PC World...

Acer's First Windows 7 Netbook: Aspire One D250

The D250 PC World talks about is an interesting dual-booting netbook that comes with Windows XP for the usual suspects software-wise as well as Android for fast booting limiting functionality (though it need not be limited). It has an HD LCD (1280x720), Atom N280 processor, 160GB hard drive and 1GB memory. PC World also tells us it will ship with Windows 7 Starter Edition (yuck!) in Japan later this month.

But, if you do a quick search, you'll see a lot of references to a D250 model released and reviwed earlier this year with relatively common specs for netbooks.

The real story is that we are probably missing secondary model designator like D250-1165 for the older non-Android netbook model and something else for the new dual-boot N280 based model.

The bottom line is that some people will probably buy the older D250 model and be very disappointed that they did not get a dual-boot the model with a faster processor.
