Reclusive Randy Smith's Alden Global has been building a national newspaper empire, but after suffering some losses ,he may be looking to recycle that idea. Smith last fall bought a roughly 30 percent share of The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News, and the expectation was that he would build on that stake. But the owners of the Philadelphia Media Network are now in the middle of an auction to sell it for roughly $100 million, and Smith so far is on the sellers' side of the table, showing no indication that he or Alden will be a buyer, a source close to the situation said.

Gannett Misses Earnings On Special Charges, Digital Revenue Up (paidContent)
Gannett posted lower-than-expected earnings for the fourth quarter of 2011 after incurring special charges related to work-force restructuring and asset write-downs. A report also showed that its newspaper empire continues to struggle, but that its digital business is up 11 percent for the year. TVSpy: Gannett -- which owns 23 stations across the country, including WUSA in Washington, D.C., and KARE in Minneapolis -- countered a significant drop in political advertising in the fourth quarter with an 11.3 percent increase in nonpolitical revenues.
