HSN May Be Key to Ending Diller-Malone Feud (WSJ)
IAC's fourth-quarter results last week included signs of improvement at home-shopping network HSN, one of the media moguls' first business ventures together. That could make it easier to negotiate a deal in which Mr. Malone's Liberty Media Corp. would take control of HSN and possibly another asset in return for giving up its majority voting stake in IAC.
Sinclair Asks D.C. Court to Block Enforcement of Media Local-Ownership Rules (B&C)
Station owner Sinclair Broadcast Group went back to the D.C. Federal Court to challenge the Federal Communications Commission's local-ownership rules once again. Sinclair challenged those rules in 2002, with the court directing the FCC to either better justify them or throw them out. The FCC did neither, Sinclair said, and it asked the court Friday to tell the FCC to immediately "abandon enforcement" of the rules.
Overstating the Threat to Democracy Posed by Corporate Media (CJR)
Carlin Romano: Your average scoop-minded journalist would rather see his expenses cut by 90 percent, or face a plagiarism charge spotlighted by Romenesko, than read a book by a communication scholar. It's a blunt calculation of lesser pain. The first two assaults can be fought and repulsed. The third lasers into that part of a journalist's brain that craves constant feeding of germane fact, persuasive evidence, sensible argument, even-handed analysis, and lively style.
Nonprofit Journalism on the Rise (CSM)
The success of the tightly focused Voice of San Diego, which relies on donors, offers a ray of hope for a troubled industry. Several nonprofit newspapers have sprung up in recent years both online and in print, funded largely by foundations and individual donors. The strategy of nonprofits like the Voice "may be one of the ways to preserve the integrity of journalism," said Dean Nelson, a journalism professor at San Diego's Point Loma Nazarene University.
Seattle Times Won't Run 'Vagina Monologues' Ad (Seattle Weekly)
On February 24, in honor of "V-Day," the National Council of Jewish Women Seattle office is co-sponsoring two performances of the Eve Ensler's "Vagina Monologues." To publicize the event, the group produced a print ad for placement in the Seattle Times, among other publications. But the Times declined to run it unless the sponsors altered the artwork which they refused to do.
Three Mag Execs at the Forefront of Web Integration (MIN)
Michele S. Magazine: Although magazine Web sites are no longer a novelty, many publishers are still struggling to make them fit into the overall business. How to manage online sales and marketing along with the proliferation of new-media opportunities is what is new, and the implications of staffing and where to find new talent as well as holding onto existing talent is the challenge.
