Sulz Sees the Future and It's Not Black-and-White (NYO)
Tom Scocca: Under Arthur Sulzberger, there has always been a New York Times of Tomorrow on its way. A press release goes out, hailing the birth of a new multi-digi-media cross-platform branded initiative, and it turns out to be the obit of the last one. Yet while his fellow Davos ruminators were softly chewing the cud of the future, Sulzberger blurted out something new: "I don't care."
Ancier to Head BBC's U.S. Operations (B&C)
Former NBC, Fox and WB entertainment executive Garth Ancier is joining BBC Worldwide Americas in a new slot president of U.S. operations. Ancier will move from L.A. to New York to oversee all of the BBC's U.S. ventures. That includes cable channel BBC America and others, as well as BBC Worldwide Productions, which makes Dancing With the Stars, among other shows.
Lawsuit in N.J. Raises Issues for Many News Outlets (E&P)
After a city councilman in Teaneck, N.J., was revealed to have posted very negative comments under a pseudonym on NJ.com, a joint venture of several New Jersey newspapers, he stepped down from office and moved his family out of town. But did the site violate his rights?
No Decision on Tribune Auction (LAT)
Tribune Co. directors met yesterday with no resolution of the company's months-long auction. The lack of acceptable buyout offers appeared to be pushing the company toward a recapitalization without outside investors. Such a transaction, they said, probably would involve borrowing heavily to pay shareholders a large dividend and spinning off Tribune's TV broadcasting division. E&P: Tribune Co.'s board of directors said they are still undergoing the strategic review.
Ion Bid Could Knock Out NBCU (NYP)
Disgruntled investors in Ion Media Networks, owner of the family-friendly TV network formerly known as PAX, are planning a rival buyout bid for the company that could wipe out NBC Universal's 32 percent stake. The investors are unhappy with what they argue is a paltry and self-serving takeover offer put on the table a month ago by Citadel Investment and endorsed by NBC.
Judge Reprimands NYT Reporter for Tactics in Obtaining Documents (NY Sun)
A federal judge castigated a New York Times reporter yesterday for allegedly stealing sealed court documents that later became the basis for two front-page scoops about a pharmaceutical company. The judge, Jack Weinstein of U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, accused Alex Berenson of engaging in "reprehensible" conduct to obtain documents dealing with Eli Lilly's anti-psychotic drug, Zyprexa.
