Confusion in Moscow Retrial Over Editor's Killing (NYT)
The retrial of three men charged with murdering Paul Klebnikov, the American editor of the Russian-language Forbes magazine, opened in confusion on Thursday as two of the suspects failed to appear in court and the judge postponed the beginning of jury selection for a month.
Edwards Campaign Enters Second Life (Eat The Press)
John Edwards clearly isn't letting his recent blogging debacle keep him away from the Internet for long. Yesterday Edwards opened his own campaign headquarters in Second Life. While involvement by the media and advertisers in Second Life is nothing new, Edwards is the first Presidential Candidate to establish him or herself there.
Media Violating Own Ethic Policies? (Salon)
Glenn Greenwald: A substantial amount, if not the majority, of reports based on anonymous government sources are nothing more than glorified government press releases which access-hungry reporters are (willingly) tricked into viewing as some sort of scoop and therefore passing it on willingly as though it is journalistically verified fact.
Diet Pill Maker Underwrites PBS Obesity Show (B&C)
The sponsorship of a PBS program on obesity by diet drug maker GlaxoSmithKline has one veteran noncom TV watcher a bit exercised, but PBS says it is by the book. Jeff Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, has written to PBS ombudsman Michael Getler to complain about what he sees as too lax sponsorship policies.
Fox's 'Deeply Pathetic Daily Show Ripoff' (Slate)
Troy Patterson: You couldn't skewer a cube of tofu with material as dull as The 1/2 Hour News Hour. It will play to the base, maybe, especially if the base hands the remote control to its 12-year-old son. As a humorless liberal, I can handle it. It's the conservatives the ones with actual gifts for comedy who ought to be sharpening their knives.
Relix Publisher Buys ... Metal Edge and Metal Maniacs? (FishbowlNY)
Steve Bernstein, owner and publisher of 33-year-old Grateful Dead fanzine-turned-jam band magazine of record Relix and proprietor of Zenbu Media, has acquired a pair of metal yes, metal music magazines. The 21-year-old Metal Edge ("rock's hardest magazine") and the slightly younger Metal Maniacs will join Relix and Global Rhythm in Zenbu's New York offices, where Bernstein is quietly building a multi-platform media company.
