States Urge FCC Constraints on XM-Sirius (Reuters)
A group of state attorneys general on Thursday urged the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to impose restrictions on Sirius Satellite Radio's purchase of rival XM Satellite Radio if it decides to approve the $4.15 billion deal. Attorneys general from 11 states including Ohio, Missouri, Connecticut and Iowa told the FCC they were "disappointed" by Justice Department antitrust regulators' decision.
What Will Fox News Do After the Bush Era? (Time)
James Poniewozik: Fox hasn't gone soft, but from watching its coverage lately, I get a sense that the haven for conservative hosts, and viewers alienated by liberal news, needs to figure out its next act. With two Democrats locked in what seems like a general-election campaign and lame-duck Bush fading from the headlines, it has to figure out how not to seem like yesterday's news.
Chinese Monopoly Law Could Impede Microsoft Deal for Yahoo (NYT)
Microsoft's hostile-takeover attempt against Yahoo may encounter an unexpected hurdle in August after a Chinese anti-monopoly law takes effect that will extend the nation's economic influence far beyond its borders. The law, which goes into effect on Aug. 1, is intended to strengthen an existing set of antitrust regulations the Chinese originally established in 1993. Bloomberg: AOL wants to benefit from Yahoo/Microsoft battle.
News Balance Is No Easy Task (Chicago Tribune)
Timothy McNulty: Questions of bias are always difficult. Tone in headlines and the choice of photographs can be very subjective. Journalism is rarely about numbers and the quantity of stories doesn't mean they are favorable. Still, there is no excuse for favoritism in covering political candidates and at times I do get a sense that reporters, consciously or not, are rooting for Barack Obama.
