Two ABC News Staffers Killed in Iraq (B&C)
Alaa Uldeen Aziz, 33, a cameraman, and soundman Saif Laith Yousuf, 26, were on their way home from work at the ABC Baghdad bureau when they were ambushed and murdered after being forced out of their car by unknown assailants, ABC News President David Westin said Friday. ABC News: "We lost two family members."
Jared Paul Stern Plans to Sue NYP (Page Six)
The journalist, who was investigated for alleged extortion by the U.S. Attorney's Office but never charged, included with a demand for money a four-page list of embarrassing allegations about his former colleagues that he is prepared to make public. Post editor-in-chief Col Allan said the Post, as a matter of principle, wouldn't pay even one cent to the litigious Stern, who, represented by controversial lawyer Larry Klayman, is also suing Ron Burkle, the Daily News, former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton.
Elizabeth Spiers Knows Where Old Media Go Wrong (Marketwatch)
Jon Friedman: Elizabeth Spiers, a shining star of the blogosphere, has little patience for the clumsy way that the mainstream media have handled many of their Internet assets. "Their idea of doing experimental launches isn't experimental," she said. "The establishment media interest me if they're doing innovative things." Spiers' analysis shouldn't be taken lightly. Most recently, she was the publisher of Dead Horse Media. Previously, she edited Mediabistro.com and founded Gawker.com. Even though I realize it might cause some of her peers to choke on their Red Bull, Spiers deserves credit as a godmother of the explosive snarky-blog movement.
Paper Tigers (TNR)
It would be hard to find three families who have supported democratic principles around the world with more resolve than the Sulzbergers, the Grahams, and the Bancrofts. The first two scarcely need introduction. The Sulzbergers, of course, control The New York Times Company. The Grahams own The Washington Post Company. But, until this month, few outside the world of journalism could have identified the Bancrofts.
East Bay Express Editor Buys Paper From Village Voice Media (SF Chron)
East Bay Express editor Stephen Buel accomplished something unusual Thursday in this era of media consolidation: He and a partner corralled a group of eight independent investors to buy the 60,000-circulation alternative weekly from the 17-publication Village Voice Media chain. Both parties declined to reveal terms of the deal, or even whether the Express is profitable.
