A Conference Dissects The Sopranos (New Yorker)
Over Memorial Day weekend, fittingly, Fordham University hosted a conference called "The Sopranos: A Wake." Among the papers were "'Blabbermouth C*nts': The Sopranos and the Feminist Dilemma," "A 'Finook' in the Crew: Vito Spatafore, The Sopranos, and the Queering of the Mob Genre," and "Slouching Toward Jersey: The Sopranos and Yeats."
Grappling With Cable's Future (WSJ)
Media giant Time Warner Inc.. will soon spin off its Time Warner Cable arm. The plan puts a spotlight on 59-year-old Glenn Britt, who for seven years has led the unit, the nation's second-largest cable company after Comcast Corp. Saddled with this debt and facing mounting competition, it will be essential for Mr. Britt to keep improving cash flow.
Study: Young Adults Have 'News Fatigue' (AP)
Young adults experience news fatigue from being inundated by facts and updates and have trouble accessing in-depth stories, according to a study to be unveiled at a global media conference Monday. The Context-Based Research Group, an ethnographic research firm, found that the news consumption behavior of younger readers differs profoundly from that of previous generations.
Fire at Universal Studios Destroys Sets, Videos (AP)
One of Hollywood's largest movie studios starred in a disastrous sequel Sunday as a fire ripped through a lot at Universal Studios, destroying a set from Back to the Future, a King Kong exhibit and a streetscape seen frequently in movies and TV shows. It was the second fire at the historic site in nearly two decades, leveling facades, hollowing out buildings and creating the kind of catastrophe filmmakers relish re-creating.
Mitch Fox, Post-Condé Nast, Is Very Happy 'Everywhere' (MIN)
In the midst of a few weeks this winter, Fox went from Condé Nast group president (and all the perks that surrounded a 20-year executive) to building the San Francisco- and New York-based 8020 Publishing, a 19-staff-member company with two bimonthlies Everywhere (travel) and JPG (photography) where the Internet is the cause and print is the effect.
