NBC's Silverman Channeling Jack Welch (NYP)
Jonathan Silverman and Marc Graboff decided to focus less on programming during their first year on the job and more on squeezing additional profit out of NBC Entertainment. "We're managing for margins and not for ratings," said Silverman. The financial belt-tightening Silverman and Graboff have instituted at NBC Entertainment mirrors similar moves by other GE divisions to increase profitability.
U.S. News Unveils Redesign (Folio:)
A month after it announced a shift to biweekly frequency in 2009 -- effectively ending its status as a "newsweekly" -- U.S. News & World Report this week unveiled an extensive redesign of its magazine. The redesign includes a new logo, typeface, retooled front-of-book and feature well showcasing longer pieces.
Writers Guild Unveils American Idol 'Truth Tour' (LAT)
Continuing its attempt to organize scribes who work in reality TV, the Writers Guild of America, West, has launched a campaign targeting the hit Fox TV show American Idol. Starting today in Daly City, Calif., about 50 reality TV writers and supporters will stage a series of protests in cities where American Idol holds auditions to highlight what they describe as the poor treatment of writers.
Lions Gate to Share Ad Revenue on Movie Clips on YouTube (AP via USAT)
Google Inc. said Wednesday that it will partner with filmmaker Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. to share revenue from ads that Google places on YouTube clips from the studio's movies. The deal will put advertising on clips uploaded by users and by the studio itself from Lions Gate movies such as the Saw horror series and Dirty Dancing.
BET to Expand Political Coverage and Add New Talk Show (Politico)
Black Entertainment Television announced today that they would be adding a new weekly political talk show -- The Truth with Jeff Johnson -- starting August 15. According to a statement, the show "will use a mix of investigative reporting and one-on-one interviews with leading experts to review the week's events and examine exactly what the top headlines mean for the Black community."
Vogue Models a New Reality Series (WSJ)
In a new effort to attract a younger audience and capture marketing dollars that are increasingly going to the web, Vogue has teamed with the fashion and media divisions of IMG to produce an elaborate web-based reality series about the fashion industry.
