How Can The New York Times Be Worth So Little? (BusinessWeek)
Does anyone really believe that Times Co.'s other assets -- The New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, and its New York City radio station -- could be worth only $750 million? For that matter, does anyone believe The New York Times alone, given its august news franchise and extraordinarily well-trafficked web site, is only worth $750 million?
Women's Fashion/Beauty Mags Fall Preview (MIN)
For publishers seeking to build their all-important September 2008 business, they seemingly faced the perfect Murphy's Law scenario with a weak "everything": economy, dollar, consumer confidence, etc. Sure enough, the women's fashion/beauty September shows steep, double-digit page drops by Glamour, In Style, O, Vogue, and W. But all except In Style set ad-page records last September.
Ex-Google Engineers Debut 'Cuil' Way to Search (AP)
Anna Patterson's last Internet search engine was so impressive that industry leader Google Inc. bought the technology in 2004 to upgrade its own system. She believes her latest invention is even more valuable -- only this time it's not for sale. Patterson instead intends to upstage Google, which she quit in 2006 to develop a more comprehensive and efficient way to scour the Internet. The end result is Cuil, pronounced "cool." NYT: Cuil is only the latest in a long string of start-up companies that have been founded and financed with the goal of competing with Google, as well as Yahoo and Microsoft.
Buyers Want Newspapers to Reinvent Model (Mediaweek)
Print media buyers have taken notice of the newspaper industry's woes. And with the web a major factor in print's decline, papers in turn are introducing blogs and microsites focused on narrow interests and training journalists to shoot and file video for the web. On a larger scale, they're banding together to sell ads online.
Teaching Brangelina and Other Celebs to be Better Economists When Selling Baby Pics (Slate)
The celebrity baby picture market is inflating nearly as fast as the Zimbabwean dollar. According to impossible-to-confirm reports, Matthew McConaughey earned $3 million for his newborn. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have reportedly sold pictures of their newborn twins for $16 million. But inviting a glossy-magazine photographer into your home is like inviting a vampire through the doorway.
Facebook 'Stabbing' Game Removed (Guardian)
A Facebook game that lets users 'shank' each other -- street slang for stabbing -- has been removed following complaints from anti-knife crime campaigners. The virtual "shank" appears as an icon within the Facebook Superpoke! application. The application, made by US firm Slide for Facebook users, has now been removed from the social networking Web site.
