In a Divisive Campaign, Purple Becomes TV's New Neutral (NYT)
MSNBC's Keith Olbermann has worn solid pale purple ties twice in the last week. And on Tuesday, he wore another one with purple stripes. Lester Holt, the weekend anchor of NBC Nightly News, appeared on camera in a more vibrant shade, approaching magenta. Over on Fox News, Bill O'Reilly was in shiny grape. Cable Networks Push Disney Earnings Gain (B&C)
Disney's basic-cable networks powered modestly improved earnings reported Wednesday for its third fiscal quarter for the three months ended June 28. ESPN carriage fees and ad gains were the company's single largest profit driver, but they were accompanied by higher ESPN program and overhead costs.
AMI to Refinance? (WWD)
American Media Inc. has $400 million worth of bonds due to mature on May 1 and, despite a group of impatient bond holders, current market conditions aren't exactly ideal for selling them. Internet addiction -- an online-related compulsive behavior -- is a psychological and behavioral problem that is spreading around the world, experts say.
Milestone: Yahoo Drives 100 Million-Plus Visits to Newspapers (E&P)
Yahoo has driven more than 100 million visits to its newspaper partners, the consortium announced today. Under the content-distribution portion of the alliance, more than 775 newspapers provide news headlines to Yahoo for placement across the Internet giant's many channels like Yahoo Sports and Yahoo Finance. The links take readers directly to the newspaper site.
In College New Media Programs, Who Benefits? (Inside Higher Ed)
Now that many journalism schools across the country are offering concentrations in interactive journalism, some are asking: What are the key new media skills needed today? Are journalism schools staffed to provide the training? Does training on the latest technology make any sense when the tools and industry are changing so fast that today's "cutting edge" may be tomorrow's electronic typewriter?
