Will Wallpaper* Founder's New Venture Get Burned? (NYO)
In the opinion of Tyler Brulé, the ever-stylish Wallpaper* founder, the suits are looking at today's media landscape completely backwards. These days, he said, news executives and big-time publishers are foolish in closing their foreign bureaus, cutting trim size, reducing paper stock, overdoing local news and swapping editorial authority for user-generated content.
ESPN Adds Rugby Site Scrum to Its Online Empire (Variety)
ESPN has acquired another specialist sports website as the network moves to boost its online presence, purchasing rugby news, scores and info site Scrum.com from Scrum Ltd. for an undisclosed sum. The network bought cricket Web portal Cricinfo.com in June and has launched French, German, Spanish and Italian versions of ESPNsoccernet.com.
Naomi Campbell: Fashion Favors Fair Skin (Telegraph)
Fiery supermodel Naomi Campbell has attacked the fashion industry and glossy magazines for sidelining "black beauty" in favour of fair-skinned models. The 37-year-old said even she found it harder to get onto the coveted front cover as editors of magazines like Vogue consistently chose less prominent white models for newsstand impact.
Few Cover Stories About Women in Major Magazines (HuffPo)
Betty Wettenstein: As a journalist and media monitor, I had noticed the deficit of women as magazine cover stories subjects. But I decided to seriously analyze the publications, following a visit with my five-year-old nephew to a news store. He immediately identified magazines and videos for "boys" or "girls," based solely on the cover photo or image.
New York Mag Parent Company to Change Name to New York Media (Folio:)
Next week, New York magazine will move from its current (and often confusing) multi-floored Midtown Manhattan offices to a single-floor, 72,000-square-foot space at 75 Varick Street in Lower Manhattan. As part of the move slated for August 27 its parent company is changing its name to New York Media, the company announced yesterday.
Public TV Airs a New Spanish Voice (WaPo)
Wild animals, rock stars, lost skiers, Mexican presidents, gun-toting guerrillas, Bangkok taxi drivers, death-cult worshipers, crusading reporters, yoga instructors, celebrity chefs and the Cookie Monster don't usually hang out in the same TV neighborhood. But that's a sampling of the programming on V-me, the 24-hour Spanish-language digital channel that Maryland Public Television launched Monday.
Study: TV Taking a Back Seat to Web, Mobile (THR)
Personal time that consumers spend on the Internet is rivaling their TV time, with user-generated content and networking sites among the most popular destinations for entertainment seekers. Plus, people seem more open to mobile content and are looking for more traditional entertainment offerings on their mobile devices than previously thought. These are among the findings of a new IBM survey of consumer behavior in the digital age, which suggests that studios, advertisers, ad agencies, content distributors and other industry players must continue to adjust their business strategies amid changes in media usage and consumers' increased expectations for control and community.
