Brit Hume Has Anchored His Final Political Convention (WaPo)
As a conservative who doesn't hesitate to accuse much of the mainstream media of left-leaning bias, Brit Hume stands at the crossroads of an increasingly shrill debate over political coverage. And he sounds worn down by the constant battering. "It's dispiriting," he says. "This is just partisan poison, and after a while you get tired of covering it."
Michael Hammer, Business Writer, Dies at 60 (NYT)
Michael Hammer, the co-author of a best-selling book, Reengineering the Corporation, which some business experts say significantly influenced the way many corporations have reorganized their workplaces by focusing on the expertise of their employees, died Wednesday in Boston.
Vibe Redesigns, Slashing Trim Size (Mediaweek)
With a backdrop of rising paper costs and declining advertising, Vibe is downsizing. The hip-hop monthly will switch to a smaller trim size as it redesigns with the October issue, on sale Sept. 16. Vibe also cut its rate base, to 800,000 from 850,000 starting in July. The new look, under the direction of Luke Hayman of design firm Pentagram, coincides with the music magazine's 15th anniversary.
Prime-Time TV's Top-Earning Women (Forbes)
The result of both shrinking audiences and after-market opportunities for TV fare: shrinking salaries for the medium's stars. For the top earners in the medium today, television is only part of the financial picture. Take America 's Next Top Model's Tyra Banks, who tops the list with $23 million during the year-long period, thanks to her work both in front of and behind the camera.
A Bigger Women's Health (WWD)
The rate base for Women's Health has ballooned from 400,000 at its 2005 launch to 1.35 million as of the January/February issue, and that number could soar to 2 million, editor David Zinkzenko predicted. "We've pulled into the passing lane, and we're poised to surpass a lot of women's magazines now. We can see Glamour just up ahead."
Gannett vs. the Gannett Blog (CJR)
Jim Hopkins, editor of the Gannett Blog, sees his future not on the staff of another media company but as a self-employed online journalist. He’s teaching himself to produce short video documentaries and, contrary to assumptions that he's a crotchety champion of newspapers' bygone days, says he lately has become "more optimistic about the prospects for twenty-first century journalism."
