As advertising spending in magazines continues to decline, publishers are intensifying their search for revenue from marketers. The trade association for the industry, the Magazine Publishers of America, is scheduled to introduce an assertive campaign on Monday that promotes the power of its publications to move merchandise. The campaign, by a boutique agency in New York named Toy, carries the theme "under the influence of magazines."

Media Bias? Not if SpinSpotter Can Help It (BusinessWeek)
A beta version of SpinSpotter, a new Web application promising to spot bias in news stories, goes live at spinspotter.com today, as does a downloadable toolbar application the company call Spinoculars. When turned on in a user's Web browser's toolbar, Spinoculars scans Web pages and spots certain potential indicators of bias. The toolbar also will allow its users to flag phrases in news stories and opine on those called out by other Spinspotter users.

Getty Photog Wins Features Award, Talks About Jolie/Pitt Baby Pics (PDN)
It's been quite a year for Getty Images photographer Brent Stirton. On Friday, Stirton won the 2008 Visa d'Or Award for feature photography at Visa pour l'Image in Perpignan, France. He's also done celebrity shoots anonymously -- credited only to Getty Images -- that have sold for huge sums to celebrity magazines, generating millions of dollars for charity.

CNNMoney.com to Launch Retirement Channel (Mediaweek)
CNNMoney.com will roll out a new retirement channel on Sept. 9 in conjunction with a complementary editorial package in Moneys upcoming October issue, which hit newsstands on Sept 22. Though the business news site has long covered retirement, the new channel will receive a permanent link on the home page and is being designed to serve as an ongoing reference tool for users of various ages.

Hearst to Test Food Network Magazine (Mediaweek)
Despite the mixed history of publishing partnerships, Hearst Magazines and the Food Network are forging ahead with their new food title. Food Network Magazine, as they're calling it, will represent the array of the network's celeb chefs, from Paula Deen to Ina Garten to Bobby Flay. The first of two test issues is slated to come out in October, with a second to follow in January.

New E-Newspaper Reader Echoes Look of the Paper (NYT)
The electronic newspaper figures in the dreams of newspaper publishers struggling with rising production and delivery costs, lower circulation, and decreased ad revenue from their paper product. Plastic Logic will introduce publicly on Monday its version of an electronic newspaper reader: a lightweight plastic screen that mimics the look -- but not the feel -- of a printed newspaper.
