Authors, Playwrights Among 2006 MacArthur 'Genius' Fellows (WaPo)

Harvard Math Prof Says New Yorker Defamed Him (Boston Herald)
A Harvard University mathematics professor is accusing The New Yorker of defaming him in an Aug. 28 article about a noteworthy mathematical proof. Shing-Tung Yau [left] is demanding the mag prominently print numerous corrections and apologize for an "insulting illustration" that accompanied the article.
University of Maryland J-School Gets $4.4M From Knight Foundation (WaPo)
The gift includes $2 million toward a hall, to be named after the brothers who started Knight Newspapers and the foundation. An additional $2.4 million will create the Knight Institute for the Future of Journalism, which will support professional organizations and development programs.
NYT Appoints 'Futurist-in-Residence' (E&P)
The New York Times, apparently seeking to boost its image as a forward-looking paper, has announced the appointment of Michael Rogers, a former Washington Post Company executive and Newsweek.com general manager to the newly-created title.
