Chatting With Peter Schjeldahl, 'America's Most Important Living Art Critic' (VV)
A writer whose reviews have, on occasion, been scathing enough to peel the bark off a tree, Schjeldahl is a critic best known for his enthusiasms. A carrier of a sharply calibrated style of compression "two ideas per sentence," he has said Schjeldahl's writing acquires special probity when it turns to subjects dear to his heart.
CNBC's Jim Cramer to Blog for AOL's Finance Site (Bloomberg)
AOL will carry a blog by Jim Cramer, host of CNBC's Mad Money show, Ron Grant, chief operating officer of Time Warner Inc.'s Internet unit, said today. The blog will be carried for free on AOL's BloggingStocks site.
Opting Out of the Macho Food-Writing Movement (Slate)
Paul Levy: Today's market does not allow for food writing that aims to be allusive, playful, or elegantly simple. The prevailing style is like polenta or steel-cut oats: coarse. Has this influenced my own writing? It's made my sentences shorter and snappier but perhaps that is because as I age, editors get younger, and the young are more urgently hurried.
Edward Klein's Next Three Books (Salon)
In a series of biographies, Klein has painted various famous females Hillary Clinton, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and Jackie Kennedy matching shades of bitch. Klein's subjects often turn out to be grasping harpies who aren't above using their lady parts to beat the competition. Through an anonymous source, Salon recently received the opening pages of Klein's next three books.
China Going for the Gold in Press Tyranny (E&P)
Mark Fitzgerald: It's bad for foreign journalists in China, but it is much worse for the brave Chinese who dare to report the truth. The Committee to Protect Journalists says China is imprisoning 28 journalists right now. RSF counts it at 35, with another 51 "cyberdissidents," mostly bloggers who ignored the government's call for "discipline" online.
