Philly Newspapers Guild Authorizes Strike Next Week (Philadelphia Daily News)
Members of the Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia voted overwhelmingly last night to authorize a strike against the Daily News and Inquirer if such action becomes necessary after the union's contract expires on Tuesday. The strike vote recorded only four "no" votes.
Harvard Crimson Says Writer Took Material From Slate Article (BoGlo)
The Harvard Crimson has expressed regret for failing to reference a 2005 Slate column as a source for quotes used in an article by biweekly columnist Victoria Ilyinsky. The Crimson editors published an editors' note today saying that they will discontinue her column, and will remove the problematic piece from the Crimson Web site.
Shafer Misguided in Attack on Journos' Egos? (HuffPo)
Maia Szalavitz: Jack Shafer's recent series is a classic example of the contrarianism for its own sake that is putting people off the mainstream media. He's certainly right that too many investigative pieces fail to make it into the pages of newspapers but that's not because there are too many journalists or because the newsroom budget is too big.
