Walter Cronkite to Appear in Cable News Show (Baltimore Sun)
Walter Cronkite, the most widely known and respected anchorman in network TV history, will be joining Retirement Living TV as a weekly commentator. The 91-year-old journalist will appear on videotape delivering editorial commentaries every Tuesday during the Daily Cafe, a two-hour noontime program anchored by former CNN newscasters Bobbie Battista and Felicia Taylor.
Upstart Web Sites Cast a Net Over Striking Writers (WSJ)
A new crop of Web entertainment sites has popped up in recent months, many of them featuring scripted, episodic short-form content known as "webisodes." Because the sites generally aren't parties to Writers Guild of America agreements, the guild's strike against film and TV studios is seen as an opportunity to attract talent.
Why Don't Journalists Get Residuals? (HuffPo)
Albert Kim: As a writer who's worked both in Hollywood and journalism, it's clear to me that the arguments used to justify residuals in one field could certainly apply in the other. Just as in Hollywood, media conglomerates are always on the lookout for ways to repurpose their material. Journalism doesn't have as many natural recycling opportunities, but it does happen.
How to Get Your Daily Show Fix During the Writer's Strike (Slate)
Dana Stevens: As the Hollywood writers' strike enters its second week, the cold facts are starting to sink in. Such as: no more new Daily Shows. Unlike scripted dramas and sitcoms, Comedy Central's flagship show went into reruns as soon as the strike began. A Daily Show rerun is the television equivalent of a day-old newspaper but a five-year-old episode of program is pure gold
Chinese Dissidents Take on Beijing Via Media Empire (WSJ)
The largely volunteer staff of New Tang Dynasty TV are helping build one of the most significant overseas dissident movements to challenge China in decades. What started as an effort by U.S.-based Falun Gong practitioners many immigrants from China to speak out against a government crackdown back home has evolved into a broadcaster with big aspirations.
