New Mag Wants to Help Ballplayers Manage Their Money (NYP)
Lenny Dykstra, one of the stars of the 1986 World Champion New York Mets, is entering the publishing industry with Players Club, a financial advice magazine aimed at ballplayers. The high-end magazine will be filled with lifestyle advice and hard-nosed career and financial planning tips.
Rick Reilly's ESPN Deal: $17 Million Over 5 Years (Silicon Alley Insider)
Most reports have Rick pulling down a staggering $2 million a year or so for his 5-year contract at his new employer. But we hear those estimates are low. Rick, we're told, is actually going to pull down $17 million over the next five years at ESPN, or $3.4 million a year. So maybe the moral is to work for Disney instead of Time Warner; SI was reportedly only willing to pay Rick a miserly $1.5 mil. a year.
Corrections and Typos of the Year (Regret the Error)
The Houston Chronicle spent a lot of time reporting on Anna Nicole Smith this past year. In attempting to explain her, um, humble origins, the paper gave itself a measure of comeuppance. And that's what makes it the typo of the year. A photo caption in the paper read: "When Redding, a longtime scout for Playboy, discovered Smith, the model could barely right a sentence..."
