Google Infringed Copyright With Thumbnail Porn Photos (AFP)
The Internet giant infringed copyright rules by posting thumbnail-size photos from other websites on its search pages, a federal judge said yesterday. "Google's use of thumbnails likely does harm the potential market for the downloading... reduced-size images onto cell phones," said the ruling.
U.S. Still Paying to Plant Stories in Iraqi Media (AP via WaPo)
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said that the Pentagon is reviewing its practice of paying to plant stories in the Iraqi news media, withdrawing his earlier claim that it had been stopped. Public Eye: "Does Rumsfeld, or anyone else in the administration, really want the New York Times to become the Al Jazeera of the West?" asks Vaugn Ververs.
Fitness Shake-Up (NYP)
Emily Listfield, the editor-in-chief for nearly six years, is out. During her tenure the magazine's circulation jumped from 1,050,000 to 1.5 million, but there were problems aplenty, including the ouster of the CEO that hired her, a major circulation problem and finally a sale.
One company mole notes: "Jann [Wenner] is a nightmare to [Us Weekly editrix] Janice Min. He second-guesses her every decision. The funny thing is, the covers he doesn't mess with sell well." Worse, word circulated that Min, who is pregnant, will "get little to no maternity leave."

TV News' Blonde Sisterhood (Slate)
Jack Shafer (via photo slideshow): The proliferation of TV blondes will come as news only to the blind and those who have killed their televisions. Halos of honeydew yellow, strident gold, and silver birch radiate on the morning news shows, the afternoon gab slots, the business news on CNBC, prime time, and the overnight newsreader desks.
To hear EIC Ed Needham tell it, the title's early success bred a certain amount of inertia surrounding its appearance. "All magazines desire to find their groove, but if you stay in the groove too long, you suffer from over-familiarity," he said. "I think that's perhaps what's happened with Maxim."
Monitor: Give Cable Some Competition (CSM)
Editorial: Anyone who has watched cable TV bills soar year after year has to wonder if price relief will ever arrive. Now telephone companies are trying to compete by offering popular channels through phone lines. But if government regulations aren't modernized, that day may be long in coming.
Wolff Still Holds That TW Breakup Is Inevitable (IWM)
"I believe that Time Warner will come apart, with or without Carl Icahn," said Vanity Fair's Michael Wolff. "I believe that the inevitable exists in virtually everyone's mind and is accepted by virtually everyone save perhaps for [CEO] Dick Parsons."
Arianna Huffington: Ann Coulter is the right wing punditry's equivalent of crack or crystal meth. She's highly addictive giving users the delirious, giddy high of outrageousness. But then the buzz wears off and they come crashing down, their spirits shriveled, their souls poisoned.
Trump Slams Martha Again Over Apprentice Flop (NYDN)
Donald Trump took his war of words with Martha Stewart to a bruising new low yesterday, accusing her of lying about the demise of her Apprentice show and likening the lies to her insider-trading scandal. LAT: Stewart issued a statement about Trump's comments saying: "The letter is so mean-spirited and reckless that I almost can't believe my longtime friend Donald Trump wrote it."
