jackanderson.jpgFBI Seeking Journalist Jack Anderson's Papers (NYT)
The well-known reporter had long feuded with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and had exposed plans by the Central Intelligence Agency to kill Fidel Castro, the machinations of the Iran-contra affair and the misdemeanors of generations of congressmen. AP via SFC: "He would be rolling over in his grave to think that the FBI was going to go crawling through his papers willy-nilly," Anderson's son said. FBDC: Anderson's family up in arms.

Marie Claire Names New Top Editor (NYT)
Marie Claire magazine named Joanna Coles, the executive editor of More, as its editor in chief yesterday, succeeding Lesley Jane Seymour, as part of the publication's effort to give itself a face-lift. "The magazine needs a fresh perspective," said Jessica Kleiman, a spokeswoman for Marie Claire. WWD: Seymour's tenure at Marie Claire, while not quite disastrous, has been far less successful than that of her predecessor, Glenda Bailey, now editor in chief of Harper's Bazaar. Mediaweek: The change comes on the eve of the May 9 National Magazine Awards. Curious since Seymour led Marie Claire to its first National Magazine Award nomination for General Excellence — its first nod in at least five years. NYP: Seymour reportedly a victim of slumping newsstand sales.

VV's Chuck Eddy, Robert Christgau Given the Boot (Fox 411)
Roger Friedman: It's not like anyone reads the Village Voice or cares about it anymore. It was destroyed years ago, like most of what we used to call "the Village." Now kids probably wonder what it is that made this place so special. Maybe they can ask the owners of New Times. Gawker: Two more Voice legends down. At the rate they're going, that leaves, what, only Musto and Hentoff to go? NYO: Can the Voice make it without its lefty zetz?

Media Lawyers Oppose Libby Subpoenas (WaPo)
Lawyers for NBC News, The New York Times and Time Inc. accused a former White House aide of threatening the integrity of their news gathering operations by seeking access to a wide range of documents in the CIA leak case.

Bill Bennett: Pulitzer Winners Risen, Lichtblau, Priest 'Worthy of Jail' (E&P)
On his national radio program, William Bennett, the former Reagan and George H.W. Bush administration official and now a CNN commentator, said that three reporters who won Pulitzer Prizes yesterday were not "worthy of an award" but rather "worthy of jail."

Gay Talese, Serendipiter (NYO)
"Journalism is very serious, and when done well," said the 74-year-old writer Gay Talese, "it is beautiful." Talese is still missing deadlines because he labors over sentences. His ponderous nature and tendency to procrastinate are offered in ample portions in his new book, A Writer's Life. Mediabistro: 2004 MB interview with Talese.

Yahoo!'s Revenue Hits $1B (NYP)
The Internet advertising boom pushed Yahoo!'s revenue up 33 percent in the first quarter despite a drop in profit at the Web powerhouse. The results, announced after the close of trading, bode well for Google and other Internet companies that will issue earnings later this week.

Porn Media Again at Tech Forefront (LAT)
A top producer of hard-core porn will start selling downloadable movies that customers can burn to DVD and watch on their TVs, illustrating how Southern California's multibillion-dollar adult entertainment industry may again set the technological pace for Hollywood.

TV Headhunter, Blogger Fitzpatrick Dies (B&C)
Don Fitzpatrick, once one of TV's top headhunters and perhaps the industry's first blogger, died over the weekend. A longtime friend, Scott Tallal, says Fitzpatrick was found dead in his Alexandria, La. home shortly after being treated for intestinal bleeding at a local hospital.

The Mouth vs. The Bully (Slate)
Modern news organizations prevent bad blood from splattering with its former velocity. But one recent exception is the current on-air tiff between MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and Fox's Bill O'Reilly. Over-the-top and nasty, the rumble evokes some of the nastiest pissing matches in journalistic history.

Can Bloggers Make Money? (WSJ)
Blogs have plenty of buzz, but can they also generate profits? Blog entrepreneur Jason Calacanis, who last year sold his network of blogs to AOL, faces off in an email debate with the skeptical Alan Meckler, CEO of Jupitermedia.

Hachette Looks to Awe With Shock (NYP)
The new Hachette magazine's content will range from the bizarre to the sexy — although only the Web site will have the nudity that made it into print in a French version, Choc, launched two-and-a-half years ago.

Cruise Control No Match for Paparazzi (NYDN)
For at least three weeks leading up to the birth yesterday of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' daughter, a pack of up to a dozen paparazzo-driven SUVs tracked the couple's every move — and obeying speed limits and traffic laws weren't high on their list of priorities.

Teri Hatcher Gets Apology From Sun (Guardian)
The Sun newspaper and Heat magazine have settled legal cases with Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher over false claims about her private life. On page four of today's Sun the paper ran an apology for the story, published in August last year, after reaching a settlement with Hatcher.

Moral Battle in Indonesia Fueled by Playboy (Chicago Tribune)
Ponti Carolus, the publisher of the Indonesian edition of Playboy magazine that stirred Islamic militants into a rock-throwing protest recently, has one thing in common with many Western men: He says he reads the mag for the articles.
