Chicago Tribune Publisher Resigns, Cites Differences With Zell (Chicago Sun-Times)
The publisher of the Chicago Tribune said Thursday that he's resigning, a sign that deep job cuts will start at the newspaper this summer. Scott Smith told employees in a memo that he will step down once a successor is found. Randy Michaels, chief operating officer of Tribune Co., said in separate memo that Smith's replacement probably will be named soon. Chicago Tribune: Asked if he felt the new leaders have unfairly maligned the past regime, Smith allowed that "criticism is easy" and "it's what you do to make it better that matters."
Yahoo Strikes Deal With Google as Microsoft Talks End (Bloomberg)
Yahoo Inc. agreed to let Google Inc. sell some of the advertisements it runs alongside Internet search results, seeking to shore up sales after ending talks with Microsoft Corp. about a combination. The deal may add $800 million a year to sales, Yahoo said. The companies will delay implementing the program for up to three and a half months to give the U.S. Justice Department time for review. NYT: The agreement will strengthen Google's dominance over the lucrative search advertising market.
Fox Addresses Obama Baby Mama Drama (Politico)
Since Salon's Alex Koppelman caught Fox News characterizing Michelle Obama as "Obama's Baby Mama," there's been an uproar over use of such an offensive term. "A producer on the program exercised poor judgment in using this chyron during the segment," Fox's senior vice president of programming Bill Shine said in a statement.
Mike Huckabee may have flamed out as a presidential candidate, but his glibness and humor did not go unnoticed. The former Arkansas governor has signed a one-year deal as a political commentator for Fox News, where he will sound off on a variety of programs. Other cable channels had been pursuing Huckabee, who provided commentary on MSNBC during one of its primary-night broadcasts.
MySpace Gets a Makeover (Hollywood Reporter)
News Corp.'s MySpace said Friday that it is rolling out a redesigned home page, TV player, and other enhancements beginning next week. The social networking giant also will overhaul site navigation, its profile editor, and its search system. MySpace will relaunch its home page Wednesday, the culmination of a project the company has been working on since December.
CNN's Lou Dobbs Mum on Run for NJ Governor (BusinessWeek)
CNN host Lou Dobbs isn't saying whether he's considering a run for New Jersey governor. But he's also not shooting down the idea. State Republicans said Dobbs, who hosts CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight and is renowned for commentary on national politics, especially illegal immigration, is rumored to be considering a run for governor next year.
Len Downie has yet to formally step down as executive editor of the Washington Post, but a source says Newsweek editor Jon Meacham is one of the leading candidates to become Downie's successor. Of course, his departure from the staid newsweekly would make available the top slot at the mag as well a position which Newsweek International editor Fareed Zakaria is actively pursuing.
Newsweek Job for 'Fake Steve Jobs' (NYP)
Fake Steve Jobs is jumping ship. Dan Lyons, the veteran Forbes tech editor who runs a blog under the pseudonym "Fake Steve Jobs," has been poached by Newsweek editor Jon Meacham. It's the first significant hire since Newsweek went through its massive downsizing that slashed the staff by 111 people, including about 30 on the editorial side.
Critics and News Executives Split Over Sexism in Clinton Coverage (NYT)
Angered by what they consider sexist news coverage of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, many women and erstwhile Clinton supporters are proposing boycotts of the cable networks. But many in the news media with a few exceptions, including Katie Couric see little need for reconsidering their coverage or changing their approach going forward. TVNewser: Media's Clinton coverage could lead to "national discussion" of sexism.
Following the departure of longtime editor Rieva Lesonsky, executive editors Maria Valdez Haubrich and Karen Axelton also have left Entrepreneur. Haubrich and Axelton's departures come only days after parent company Entrepreneur Media named former WiesnerMedia business development vice president Amy Cosper as vice president and editor-in-chief, replacing Lesonsky.
Even Gung-Ho Newspaper Execs Are Getting Gloomy About the Future (BusinessWeek)
Jon Fine: I refuse to equate newsroom cutbacks with the death of news. For one thing, city media ecosystems have proven to be vibrant things that constantly spawn new local and niche blogs. The best match or even outdo their traditional rivals in many respects. But not all of them. Newspapers still do some things that can't be replaced. Unfortunately, we're about to find out exactly what those things are.
Warner Bros. TV Group Inks Deals for WB Site With Joost, Veoh, Others (Mediaweek)
Warner Bros. Television Group has announced distribution deals for the company's recently launched Web video reincarnations of The WB brand. TheWB.com and KidsWB.com will now make a selection of their long- and short-form content available on the video aggregators Joost, Veoh, and DailyMotion, as well as on the TV platforms of DVR pioneer TiVo as well as Sling Media.
Some years, you almost have to feel sorry for the people who pick the Emmy nominees. What are they to make of this season, with its stops and starts and strike-induced divisions? Some shows vanished in winter, and others returned for a reduced spring run in far different and usually worse shape than they had been in the fall. Just keeping track of what aired when and how is a full-time job.
Perez Hilton: Turning a Blog Into an Empire (LAT)
"I think what I do is noble," says Perez Hilton (a.k.a Mario Lavandeira). "I think my job title is entertainer. I shine the light on celebrities behaving badly, and I also shine the light on those that get it right. And those that get it right, I applaud." Advertisers pay as much as $54,000 to run a one-day ad package on the site.
Joe Nocera Doesn't Really Hate Every CEO (Marketwatch)
Jon Friedman: This may come as a shock to people who read Joe Nocera's "Talking Business" columns in The New York Times every Saturday: He doesn't believe all top executives are crooks and/or fools. The 56-year-old Nocera, who has won Gerald Loeb and John Hancock journalism awards and was a Pulitzer finalist, even has his favorites.
