ojjh5l.jpgMad Men, 30 Rock in Running for Emmys (NYT)
The nominations for television's biggest award, the Emmy, were released on Thursday morning, adding more fuel to the argument that much of the best creative work in the medium is now being done on cable, and to the perception that shows do not necessarily need big audiences to be celebrated by the television academy. EW: Mad Men's 16 nominations led all drama series and included nods for outstanding drama series and a best actor nod for John Hamm, while 30 Rock led all comedies with 17 nominations, including outstanding comedy series and actor nods for Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin. Variety: The hangover from the writers strike is reflected among the winners and losers in this year's Emmy noms derby, writes Cynthia Littleton. Variety: By nominating some of the most deserving series of the year, the TV Academy may be sacrificing ratings for credibility, writes Michael Schneider.

Tony Snow Funeral Held in Washington (Fox News)
President Bush fondly remembered Tony Snow Thursday, telling mourners at Snow's funeral that the conservative commentator-turned-White House press secretary "amassed a rare record of accomplishment." "He knew the job of a reporter was vigorous. He understood the profession and always treated it with respect," said Bush. WaPo: Snow was the first working journalist in almost 30 years to take the spokesman's job, after stints as conservative columnist, commentator, and speechwriter. TVNewser: David Gregory gave a four minute tribute to Tony Snow at the end of Race for the White House last night, following a day when he attended Snow's funeral.

Redstone to Speak in Dan Rather Suit (NYO)
Dan Rather and his lawyers were back in a Lower Manhattan courthouse yesterday for yet another round in Mr. Rather's ongoing $70 million civil lawsuit against his former employers. Over the course of a 45-minute hearing, tempers occasionally flared as the lawyers for both sides argued over a number of issues, ranging from the scheduling of depositions to the transparency of the discovery process. NYT: If CBS's motions to dismiss are rejected, a trial could begin before the end of the year.

Head of Penton Magazines to Step Down (NYP)
John French, head of Wasserstein's sprawling trade magazine empire Penton Media, is stepping down. French broke the news to surprised employees yesterday in a "Hello, everyone" e-mail released internally. French said the decision to leave was a "difficult one," but he added that he would stay on the Penton board and help in the search for his successor.

Zucker, Weinstein Clash in Court Over Project Runway (Adweek)
Jeff Zucker, president and CEO of NBC Universal, and Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Co., offered colorful and conflicting testimony Thursday at a hearing in New York State Supreme Court -- the first public skirmish in their dispute over the hit Bravo program Project Runway.

Late-Night Shake-Up May Affect Nightline (Hollywood Reporter)
Nearly three years after it could have been dealt a fatal blow by the departure of Ted Koppel, ABC's Nightline has bucked the odds to not only survive but thrive. But with Jay Leno's departure set to shake up late-night TV, Nightline may be facing an even stiffer challenge to survive.

WSJ's Sketches of Pain (CJR)
Even The Wall Street Journal's famed stipple portraits (known internally as "hedcuts") aren't immune from the bummer that is the credit crisis. Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit's visage has turned grim, while Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson went from sanguine to ticked off as markets soured. AdAge: This isn't the first time the Journal's iconic portraits -- created with a technique called stippling -- have seized the spotlight. Here's a brief history.

Movie Bloggers Call for Boycott of Variety, Hollywood Reporter (Folio:)
Few industries have as many (or as widely-read) blogs and independent sites as the entertainment industry. Now Variety and Hollywood Reporter have drawn the ire of several independent movie blogs, which claim the sites have taken news from the blogs without attribution and are now calling on the blogging community to stop providing links to the trade sites.

House Panelists Seek Opt-In Rule for Web Tracking (LAT)
A key House lawmaker said Thursday that Internet service providers should be prohibited from tracking customers' Web activities to deliver targeted ads without those users' clear approval. The practice, pioneered by NebuAd, has drawn fire from privacy advocates. They say the technology, known as deep packet inspection, raises major concerns and potentially violates federal and state wiretapping laws.

Former NBC News Man Joins Family's PR Firm (TVNewser)
John Seigenthaler, who was one of the original anchors at MSNBC and went on to anchor the weekend editions of NBC Nightly News, is joining his family's public relations firm, based in Nashville. Seigenthaler has joined Seigenthaler Public Relations Inc. as partner and CEO of the New York office. NYO: "I had a great run on NBC News for a number of years," said Seigenthaler. "I covered some of the biggest stories in the world. But I was ready for a change."

Talking Bylines With New Chicago Tribune Editor (Reuters)
Tribune is embarking on another round of job cuts at its papers, sparking fear and loathing among employees, and launching an ambitious plan to redo the papers' sizes and looks. It also has a new plan to review reporter productivity as a possible condition for staying on board. New Chicago Tribune editor Gerould Kern addressed some of these topics in a phone interview.

ABC Scrubs In (Forbes)
After seven seasons on NBC, the staff of Scrubs' Sacred Heart Hospital has found a new place to operate: ABC. Onstage before a gathering of television reporters Wednesday at the Critics Association's semi-annual conference in Los Angeles, the NBC-turned-ABC cast and crew joked about the resilience of their poorly rated series.

Hulu Users Happy With Site and Tech-Savvy but Not Numerous (TV Week)
Despite a high-profile in the media business, only 15% of online Americans have even heard of Hulu.com, the NBC-Fox online video venture. But those who have used the site like it a lot. That's the conclusion of a recent study from Solutions Research Group. Hulu users say they like the ability to search and find both old episodes of TV shows and recent ones they missed. Hulu visitors also like that the shows are free and that the service operates as something of an online digital video recorder. AdAge: Most say ads are a "reasonable" cost of free online video.

Who's Coming Up With Ideas to Save Newspapers? (The Nation)
Eric Alterman: The dearth of decent ideas designed to save newspapers is curious and depressing. It's curious because some of the smartest, most ambitious and most civic-minded people in America are deeply engaged with the problem. It is depressing because the only ones with the self-confidence to undertake radical measures appear to be completely off their respective rockers.

Financial Meltdown Posed Problems for Journos, Too (Marketwatch)
Jon Friedman: "I've been doing this for almost 40 years," said Allan Sloan, a top writer for Fortune. "What's been going on is the most dangerous -- and weird -- [financial] market. And the stock market is the least of it." The flow of scary news "just doesn't go away," Sloan marveled. The seemingly endless stream of gloomy financial news has posed special challenges to journalists.
