bonds_reporters_testify.jpgCourt: SF Chron Reporters Must Testify on Bonds Leak (AP)
The decision by a U.S. District Court means reporters Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada must appear before a grand jury investigating the leak unless a higher court blocks the ruling. The pair have said they would not testify and would go to jail rather than reveal their source or sources.

CBS to Offer Prime-Time Shows Online (LAT)
The network plans to air prime-time television programs, including its top-rated CSI series and Survivor shows, on the Internet for free. The shows will be made available on its high speed Internet channel innertube the morning after they air on the CBS broadcast network.

YouTube Suffers First Unplanned Outage (Reuters)
Web video sensation YouTube.com, which serves up more than 100 million videos online a day, suffered a six-hour breakdown on Tuesday — its first-ever unplanned outage. "We are experiencing a temporary site outage due to a database-related issue," YouTube spokeswoman Julie Supan said. Reuters: YouTube is in talks with record labels about the possibility of posting thousands of music videos online.

Gaza Militant Groups Deny Kidnapping of Fox News Crew (AP via CBS News)
The wife of a kidnapped Fox News cameraman said today she's been told by Palestinian officials her husband's captors acted on their own, without support from militant groups. The cameraman, Olaf Wiig, 36, of New Zealand, and Fox reporter Steve Centanni, 60, a U.S. citizen, were abducted Monday.

Jill Carroll's Story: Part 3 (CSM)
"Two days after the kidnapping — my captors began trying to convert me to Islam. ... They'd kidnapped me, and they all had guns ready to kill me, but, oh no, no pressure there. ... I have always been interested in learning about Islam. But only so that I can understand the people I'm covering as a journalist."

Brit Tab Apologizes for Errors in Prince Harry Boob-Grab Story (Guardian)
The Sun has published an apology for wrongly dating and locating the story showing photos of Prince Harry groping a girl's breast. "We accept that the nightclub was the Purple Nightclub and not Boujis as we said and the photographs were taken in autumn 2003 and not summer 2006."

NYC TV Teams With WNBC To Tap Into A Wider Audience (NY Sun)
The city's television station, NYC TV, is taking its show on the road. Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced yesterday that the Emmy award-winning station is partnering with WNBC, which will be showing more than 100 episodes of some its most popular shows.

Mark Burnett Got Sweetheart Deal on MSO Stock (NYP)
Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia gave reality television king Mark Burnett the chance to buy $14 million worth of stock at a deep discount — about 27 percent below yesterday's closing price of $17.26 — to keep him as a producer for the daytime show Martha.

Google Warns Media On Use Of Verb (All Headline News)
Concerned about trademark violation, the company has sent legal letters to several news organizations. "We think it's important to make the distinction between using the word Google to describe using Google to search the Internet, and using the word Google to describe searching the Internet."

Ads Coming to Textbooks (AP via WaPo)
Textbook prices are soaring into the hundreds of dollars, but in some courses this fall, students won't pay a dime. The catch: Their textbooks will have ads for companies including FedEx Kinko's and Pura Vida coffee.

Peltz Stake Boosts Tribune Co. (WSJ)
Given Nelson Peltz's history of shareholder activism, his emergence as a stakeholder could complicate what has been a bitter boardroom fight at Tribune. His recent contact with the Chandler family also signals that Peltz may not simply be taking a passive interest in Tribune.

Press Readies Coverage of 'Hot' Mid-Term Elections (E&P)
With President Bush's approval ratings at record lows, domestic issues from gas prices to immigration bubbling, and overseas headaches from Iraq to Lebanon in the mix, there is no shortage of news angles to take on, veteran political editors and reporters say.

Product Placement Increasing (NYT)
Stuart Elliott: A report, scheduled to be released today, predicts that marketers will remain enamored with placing products wherever they can: in movies, television and radio shows; on Web sites; in video games; in lyrics; in newspaper and magazine articles; and even in the plots of novels.

Can Couric Shine at CBS? (USAT)
All eyes are on the network and its new star. Some people, fairly or unfairly, expect her to repeat her Today show performance at her new gig. "Katie's exuberance will likely soon put her well ahead of her rivals in the ratings," predicts Paul Levinson, a Fordham University journalism professor.

NYT Goes Hollywood (NYO)
In June, The Times chose the Broder-Webb-Chervin-Silberman Agency, a small but prestigious Beverly Hills firm, to represent the paper in negotiations for film and television rights to its content. The paper previously handled requests for film and television rights through its own legal department.

Web Searches Go Low-Tech: You Ask, a Person Answers (WaPo)
For Yahoo and a handful of other companies trying to harness knowledge from a vast corps of users, such projects raise their own big questions: Will users trust the advice of volunteers, and is this new form of sharing information online useful and accurate?

Jeff Bridges Voted Best to Play Vanity Fair's Graydon Carter in Toby Young Film (Jossip)
Corynne Steindler: Out of 583 votes, 254 of you voted for Jeff Bridges, giving him the win by a 44% landslide. If Jeff falls down dead, though, either Richard Dreyfuss or Meryl Streep could take his place. We can't wait to see who they actually pick!

Joan Rivers Swishes Channels (NYO)
Rivers is seeking male co-hosts for her new Bravo show — and by all appearances, a particular kind of male. Would-be co-hosts were clear on the concept: "It was as if they took all the notable gays in the city and brought them in," said one auditioner.

At The End Of The Day, Study In Hot Pursuit Of Popular Press Clichés Reveals Low-Hanging Fruit (FishbowlNY)
Citing a whopping 10,000 news sources, including the Wall Street Journal, Reuters and the Associated Press, an analysis by Factiva of clichés used by the press, by far the most commonly used is "at the end of the day."
