Bomber Attacks Baghdad Paper, Kills 2, Wounds 20 (NYT)
A suicide car bomber attacked Iraq's largest newspaper on Sunday, detonating his vehicle inside its fortified compound in downtown Baghdad, killing two people and wounding 20 others. BBC: Israeli rocket hits Reuters car in Gaza. Cameraman, journalist wounded.
Freed Fox News Journalists Describe Ordeal (AP via Chicago Sun Times)
Two Fox News journalists freed by militants Sunday described a harrowing two weeks of captivity during which they were blindfolded, tied in painful positions and forced at gunpoint to say on a video that they converted to Islam. Departed Series Pick Up Emmys (AP via NYT)
Departed series were the bittersweet toast of the Emmys as Will & Grace, The West Wing and Huff picked up acting trophies. "It's not supposed to work this way, is it, when you say goodbye to something?" said Blythe Danner, named best supporting actress in a drama for the canceled Huff. The Sudanese government has charged Paul Salopek, a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune and winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, with espionage and entering the country illegally. Mr. Salopek crossed the border from Chad into the troubled region of Darfur without a visa about three weeks ago.
Google, eBay Form Advertising Alliance (AP via BusinessWeek)
Google Inc. will begin selling advertising on Web auction leader eBay and help buyers "click-to-call" an online merchant to do business.
Questions Arise Over Forbes.com Traffic (NYT)
Its own ads proclaim that "more people get their business news from Forbes.com than any other source in the world," saying that its sites drew about 15 million unique visitors in a single month earlier this year a big reason Elevation Partners, a private equity firm that counts Bono of U2 as a managing director, agreed on Aug. 4 to buy a minority stake in Forbes' publishing business. But a closer look at the numbers raises questions about Forbes.com's industry-leading success.
"I'm proud of the work we did there, but it's not a good time in the history of that show. It's hard to watch. It sort of became a joke."

Newsweek Says Armitage Was Plame Source for Both Novak and Woodward (Newsweek via E&P)
In an article posted on its Web site, Newsweek's Michael Isikoff declared that former Richard Armitage, the former deputy secretary of state, "outed" ex-CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson to both columnist Robert Novak and Bob Woodward of the Washington Post. The scoop comes from the book Hubris, by Isikoff and David Corn, to be published in early September.
Economists and other academics that study the movie industry say most marquee names in Hollywood are simply not worth the expense.
New Harvard Magazine Hopes Advertisers Buy Into Alumni (NYP)
The thinking is that this group of overachievers including the heads of three of the five big investment banks, one of out five partners at the top 20 law firms and a disproportionate number of Fortune 500 CEOs will find it hard to resist a publication that sizes up their peers. The Sept. 25 debut issue of 02138 -- named after Harvard's zip code -- will list the top 100 Harvard alumni.

Shop Etc.'s staffers learned of their demise in the most Hollywood of publishing industry ways: Hearst chief Cathie Black marched into the office on 1790 Broadway, unannounced, flanked by Hearst exec John Hartig and publishing director Michael Clinton. She called for the staff to be rounded up and summarily delivered the news about the magazine's shuttering. No Takers For Another Prada Book (Page Six)
Former Star magazine scribe Stephanie Green has won her court case to publish a book a la The Devil Wears Prada overturning a confidentiality agreement she signed but no one's interested. Green spent more than $30,000 winning her case, but no publisher is jumping to sign a deal, much to the relief of Bonnie Fuller and Star editor Joe Dolce who come off pretty badly in the excerpts of the "fiction" on Green's blog, Dishalicious.

"Could anyone imagine 10 years ago saying that in 10 years, Knight Ridder would not exist?" asked Jay T. Harris, a former publisher for Knight Ridder at the San Jose Mercury News who quit in 2001 rather than make cuts that the company sought. "It was one of the strongest newspaper companies in America. How could you have a hand like that and play it in such a way that you would end up losing everything?"
