Miller to Testify Again Today (E&P)
After meeting again with Patrick J. Fitzgerald, the federal prosecutor in the Valerie Plame/CIA leak case Tuesday, New York Times reporter Judith Miller must testify again before the grand jury. Huffington Post: News orgs working to tie Vice President Dick Cheney into Plamegate. WSJ: There are signs that prosecutors now are looking into contacts between administration officials and journalists that took place much earlier than previously thought. WaPo: The newsgathering mission of the Times—the responsibility to report aggressively on a story about the outing of a CIA operative that has reached the highest levels of the White House—has collided with the understandably human need to protect its reporter. NYO: Amid the confusion, The Times' failure to write about the case is wearing on the rank and file. VV: WMD still embedded in the Times' newsroom? NYT: In his statement to the staff, Keller said the contempt order under which Miller had been jailed still remained in effect, meaning that she "is not yet clear of legal jeopardy."

High Cost of Newsprint Leads WSJ to Trim Pages (WaPo)
Beginning in January 2007, the front page of the Journal, which is now 15 inches wide, will be 12 inches wide—an entire column narrower. The depth of the page will stay the same, at 22 3/4 inches. NYT: The change is intended to save on the rising cost of paper.

Clear Channel Axes Two Over Payola (LAT)
The broadcaster fired two employees after an investigation by New York Atty. Gen. Eliot Spitzer alleged that some of the radio giant's programmers improperly accepted gifts from record companies in exchange for airplay.

LAT Taps New Managing Eds (LAT)
Investigative journalist Doug Frantz and deputy managing editor Leo Wolinsky were named managing editors of the paper as part of top-level management changes by new editor Dean Baquet.

Michael Caruso Out as Editor at Men's Journal (WWD)
The move comes as no surprise to insiders who say Caruso had spoke of leaving the magazine over the summer because he was unhappy with the company's management style.

Time Warner Responds to Icahn (CNN)
"We will proceed on our course, committed to increasing the value of this company and delivering a highly competitive return for all of its shareholders."

Gannett's Profits Tumble (Reuters)
The newspaper publisher said quarterly profit fell 4 percent as it battled with higher costs as well as lower advertising in its broadcast division.

How Research Shapes the News (Public Eye)
Brian Montopoli: But why don't we cover both Sudan and Iraq? Well, one contributing reason may be that researchers believe people don't care about international news unless it clearly relates to them.

Friends Producer Goes Solo (NYT)
Marta Kauffman, the former producer of the hit NBC sitcom, talks about her new WB show, her former partnership with David Crane, and NBC's Joey.

Buffett Book Blessing Brings Big Bucks (NYP)
Investor Warren Buffett usually has only to smile at a company to send its stock soaring, and now that he has agreed to cooperate on a financial advice book, that bidding has reportedly soared into the $7 million range.

JFK Jr. Tribute Remembers George (NYDN)
The Kennedy family paid homage yesterday to John F. Kennedy Jr.'s legacy—the founding 10 years ago of his magazine George—praising him as a visionary who foresaw the fusing of politics and pop culture.

Can't Afford a Shrink? Start a Blog! (WaPo)
Nearly half of bloggers consider it a form of therapy, according to a recent survey sponsored by America Online Inc. And one hospital has started devoting space to patients' blogs on its Web site.

Fall Canning Season for Martha? (WaPo)
Chip Crews: Martha Stewart's version of The Apprentice has drawn dismal ratings and critical scorn for NBC; how long will the network let the show go on? NYT: Builder to offer "Martha Stewart-Style" homes.

ABC's Sitcoms Still Struggling (USAT)
Robert Bianco: No network has had better luck of late with the hour-long format than ABC. Yet conversely, no network has suffered through a worse sitcom drought.

NYT Gambles on About.com (Marketwatch)
Jon Friedman: The Times gobbled up About in a blatant attempt to capitalize on the Internet's appeal to advertisers and diversify its overall revenue base.

Getting, and Giving, Mixed Messages on Terror (NYO)
Last week's story of a terror threat to New York was problematic for MSNBC's newsroom. There was a fine line between informing the viewing public about terror threats and merely alarming everyone.

The Greatest Children's Book Author You've Never Heard Of (Slate)
Jacqueline Wilson is a best-selling, award-winning British novelist. Her books have won or been shortlisted for most of the British children's book awards. And chances are that you have never heard of her.

Used Books Gaining in Popularity (CSM)
Last year, U.S. consumers spent more than $2.2 billion to buy 111 million used books. That's up 11 percent from 2003, according to a landmark study by the Book Industry Study Group.

Thanks To Jeff Zucker, NBC News Was "Essentially Leaderless" For Three Months [TVNewser]
John Cook's upcoming Radar Magazine piece about Jeff Zucker is a must-read. It includes this behind-the-scenes play-by-play of Neal Shapiro's prolonged exit: "The nominal reason for his ouster was the sagging ratings of the Today show, the network's most lucrative franchise..."

Paramount Classics New President Out of Focus? [FishBowlLA]
SUIT ALERT: Fishbowl L.A. is puzzled. Why? On the one hand, Daily Variety reported on June 8th that Glen Basner had quit as Focus Features international head and was "immediately" going to be working for both Miramax Films and the Weinsteins' new venture. Why, then, are numerous sources insisting (both inside and outside Paramount) that the Weinsteins can't (or won't) make a deal with Basner, and that he'll soon be the new president of Paramount Classics?

Unceremoniously Firing Mr. Wiggles [FishBowlNY]
There's an interesting look at the topsy-turvy world of New York press over at The Apiary, wherein we get the disgruntled-ex-employee's-eye-view of what's been going on in the wake of the revolving door of editors. After five years of writing the weekly comic strip "Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles," Neil Swaab was unceremoniously fired by most recent editor-in-chief Harry Siegel. OVER EMAIL. Classy, real classy.

Tim, Can You Spare a Woman? [FishBowlDC]
Women are (shockingly!) under-represented on the Sunday talk shows, a new study by the White House Project shows. The study, which covers an eight-month period from Nov. '04 to July '05, shows that 56 percent of the top five Sunday shows don't include a single female guest and that, overall, women are outnumbered nine to one on the gabfests.

The First Cut Won't Hurt at All [Galleycat]
I've seen all sorts of reportorial disclosures in my day, but Salon book editor Hillary Frey unleashes a curveball in her complete evisceration of James Frey's A Million Little Pieces. Two paragraphs in, she says the Oprah-crowned memoirist "shares my father's name but is no relation." Shares my father's name? Are we working towards a minimum word count or something?

Help Yourself [MBToolbox]
Think you have what it takes to publish a self-help article, or even a book? I asked a few pros for tips for beginners.
