Letterman 'Extortion' Perp Thought Dave Might Kill Him (NYP)
The CBS producer accused in a $2 million shakedown of David Letterman was so paranoid, he thought the late-night king might get him fired, burn his house down -- or even kill him, according to revelations in the alleged extortion scheme. AP: Prosecutors, in a court filing asking that the charges be upheld, said Halderman's comments make it "crystal clear" that his goal was extortion -- not a screenplay sale.

TNR to Lay Off Third of Staff (FishbowlDC)
A third of The New Republic's staff will be let go, FishbowlDC sources have confirmed. "I'm still rooting for information myself," said a TNR writer on background."A third of the staff, that's correct." It is uncertain at this point whether it is a third of the editorial staff or a third of total staff. Politico: Some staffers may remain on the masthead but as freelancers, while others take salary reductions, which will factor into the final numbers.


Delaney Promoted to WSJ 'Digital Czar' (PaidContent)
Rebecca Blumenstein, who had been the Wall Street Journal's managing editor for online, was promoted to international editor/deputy managing editor. That left a gap in online, which will be filled by veteran tech reporter Kevin Delaney, who has been deputy managing editor of WSJ.com since 2008.

Comcast is taking the lead in putting cable TV online. The company said it is extending its online TV service, in beta for the past six months, to many of its 15.7 million broadband subscribers across the country, the broadest implementation yet of what the cable industry calls "TV Everywhere."

An Illinois insurance executive has pleaded guilty to stalking and shooting nude videos of ESPN reporter Erin Andrews. Michael David Barrett entered his plea Tuesday during a hearing attended by Andrews and her attorney in a Los Angeles federal courtroom. Sports by Brooks: "I want him to stay in jail as long as possible," said Andrews. "He's a threat to all women. I dont want somone else's career to be ruined like this."

The New York Times' management was dealt a setback in its effort to cut staff yesterday after the troubled newspaper company lost an arbitration hearing on allegations it tried to rig the union's seniority rules in order to lay off workers. A recent spate of executive turnover at health-and-fitness publisher Rodale Inc. culminated in a round of promotions and organizational-chart redrawing on Tuesday -- although one person who conspicuously missed out on the fun was Men's Health editor David Zinczenko. Mediaweek: Gregg Michaelson was named president of integrated marketing and sales and chief marketing officer from executive vice president of consumer marketing.

WSJ. Mag to Increase Frequency (WWD)
Beginning in March, The Wall Street Journal's quarterly glossy magazine WSJ. will raise its circulation to 1.6 million from 800,000 and increase its publishing schedule to six issues a year. In addition to being available to all subscribers to the Journal in the U.S., WSJ. will be sold on newsstands.
