17strike-395.jpgLeno, O'Brien to Return Jan. 2 (NYT)
NBC announced on Monday that its two late-night stars, Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien, would return on Jan. 2 even if the strike against networks and studios by writers was not resolved. The two hosts would perform without writers, and the shows may face a challenge in booking guests because many actors have expressed sympathy for the writers. LAT: The Writers Guild of America also flexed its own muscles by denying waivers to the producers of the Golden Globes and the Oscars.

64 Journalists Died Covering News in '07 (AP)
Sixty-four journalists in 17 countries have died while covering the news in 2007 — the deadliest year in more than a decade. The Committee to Protect Journalists said in an annual report that Iraq led the list for the fifth year in a row, with 31 dead — one fewer than a year ago. Somalia was second with seven dead in 2007, and Pakistan and Sri Lanka each recorded five deaths.

CNN/U.S. President Klein Re-Ups for Four More Years (Hollywood Reporter)
Klein has reached a deal for a four-year extension. He is responsible for programming at the channel and reports to CNN Worldwide president Jim Walton. Klein has made his mark at CNN. He canceled the long-running Crossfire, created The Situation Room that has taken over three hours of late afternoon news on CNN, and led a team that has won News Emmys and the Peabody Award. B&C: Year-to-year (Jan. 1-Dec. 9, 2007, versus the same period in 2006), the network is up every hour from 9 a.m.-11 p.m. in the 25-54 demo.

Philly News Anchor Busted for Hitting Cop Sent on Early Vacation (New York Daily News)
It's anchor away for the Philadelphia newswoman busted in Chelsea on charges of punching a city cop in the face. Alycia Lane was suddenly on an early Christmas vacation Monday as, at least for now, her bosses at KYW-TV are giving her the benefit of the doubt. Still, they told her to skedaddle.

25 Senators Vow to Block FCC Media Rule Changes (Bloomberg)
A bipartisan group of 25 U.S. senators told the top U.S. telecommunications regulator to delay a vote on his plan to loosen restrictions on newspaper publishers owning broadcast stations. Lawmakers will act to "revoke and nullify" any easing of the cross-ownership rule that the FCC passes at its meeting today, the senators said in a letter to FCC chairman Kevin Martin, a Republican.

Ex-Jane Editor Holley to Yahoo (Mediaweek)
Brandon Holley, late of Jane, has become the latest example of an editor who's made the leap from print magazines to the digital space. Holley has been quietly working at Yahoo as executive producer, Yahoo Lifestyles, a new position at the company. Contacted at Yahoo, Holley said she couldn't comment on her new position.

David Radler Gets 29 Months for Role in Hollinger Fraud (Chicago Tribune)
Former Chicago Sun-Times publisher F. David Radler on Monday apologized for his actions as a federal judge upheld a plea agreement that will send him to prison for two years and five months for taking millions of dollars in unauthorized payments from the tabloid newspaper's parent company. Radler was the only senior executive at Hollinger International Inc. who pleaded guilty to defrauding shareholders.

Bidding Tepid for Rove Memoir (Crain's New York Business)
The auction for Karl Rove's memoir drags on a month after the Republican strategist made the rounds of publishers with Washington power lawyer Robert Barnett at his side. "It's very, very slow," says an executive at one of the few houses left in the bidding. Early reports had predicted a $3 million sale, but some insiders are wondering if Mr. Barnett has had trouble getting to that number. He declined to comment.

Limbaugh: 'Does Our Looks-Obsessed Culture Want to Stare at an Aging Woman?' (HuffPo)
Yesterday, the Drudge Report featured a not-so-flattering picture of Hillary Clinton with the screaming headline "THE TOLL OF A CAMPAIGN." Clinton, who turned 60 in October, has been traveling around Iowa and this morning hit up all six morning shows as part of a media blitz. On his radio show yesterday, Rush Limbaugh asked whether Americans would want to look at her while she aged.

David Chase to Testify in Sopranos Case (AP via USAT)
Sopranos creator David Chase is expected to take the stand today to describe the services provided by a former judge seeking compensation for his contributions to the hit Mob drama. But even if Robert Baer's help was critical to how the pilot turned out, that doesn't necessarily mean he should be paid for it, Kevin Reilly, former head of television production at Brillstein-Grey Entertainment, said Monday.

Spanish Newspaper May Lose $1.4M In Ad Sales Due to Nielsen Oversight (NY Sun)
A daily newspaper in Spain, El Pais, stands to lose $1.4 million in advertising revenue this year because of an oversight in the unique visitor ratings from the media rating company Nielsen. In March, Nielsen changed the way it measures unique Web site visits to include tracking Internet use at work, and companies in turn look to the data as "currency" for the value of its site to advertisers.

Vogue Does It All In-House (WWD)
As if Vogue didn't scoop up enough fashion advertising, it continues to reach for more via its very own in-house ad agency. No doubt raising the anxiety level of some long-standing agencies, Vogue Studio has already worked with 29 brands, including Valentino, Montblanc, Cartier, and Lancome, and is the agency of record for Via Spiga and Adrienne Vittadini.

All Eyes on Blogging Iowa Newsman (WaPo)
Shailagh Murray: At 57, having covered every campaign here since 1976, David Yepsen is the old-journalism king of the Iowa caucuses. He is also the new-journalism king of the Iowa caucuses. With his matter-of-fact newspaper assessments of candidates and their campaigns and his popular Des Moines Register blog, launched for the 2008 cycle, he makes 'em and he breaks 'em.

Building TV Buzz — Again — On the Web (Forbes)
A "dot-tv" address has plenty of glamour and appeal, particularly at a time when video is spilling out of every Web site and blog. It also has one of the most star-crossed histories on the Internet. That hasn't stopped Carson Daly and former MySpace chief executive Richard Rosenblatt from trying to build a new business around the dot-tv idea.

Twilight of the Books (New Yorker)
Caleb Crain: No effort of will is likely to make reading popular again. It may simply be the case that many Americans prefer to learn about the world and to entertain themselves with television and other streaming media, rather than with the printed word, and that it is taking a few generations for them to shed old habits like newspapers and novels. The alternative is that we are nearing the end of a pendulum swing, and that reading will return.
