NYDN COO Goodstein Defects to News Corp. (NYP)
The paper's Chief Operating Officer Les Goodstein is crossing town to join the Post's parent News Corp. as senior vice president, and will serve as an adviser to The Post and other News Corp. divisions. WWD: How upset was Mort Zuckerman over losing Goodstein? Enough so to interrupt his Aspen ski vacation and fly back to New York to try to persuade Goodstein to stay.

Time Inc. to Cut Another $100 Million Next Year (NYP)
One source said the new cuts could translate into 400 more job cuts early in 2006—a number that accounts for 3 percent of the unit's 13,200-person workforce.

Newspapers to Lift Ad Rates (WSJ)
Industry observers and ad buyers predict many newspapers won't get the ad-rate increases they want, or if they do it will come at the expense of demand. Either possibility could mean another year of lackluster ad-revenue growth for the industry or perhaps even a decline next year.

Circ Woes Hit Forbes (BusinessWeek)
A report from Audit Bureau of Circulations, released just as the media world went into its annual Christmastime hibernation, found that Forbes incorrectly classified some circulation as paid and missed delivering the circulation it guarantees advertisers.

Giving Bill Keller the Benefit of the Doubt (Slate)
Jack Shafer: It's my hunch that Keller and the Times kept pushing with the wiretapping story and only published once 1) enough of the story was verified and 2) all were confident that the story would not compromise U.S. security. E&P: Some veteran journos say Times and Post should have disclosed meetings with Bush. VV: Keller and Times should not be the focus of the wiretapping story, writes Syd Schanberg.

Sirius Passes 3 Million Users (Bloomberg via Boston Globe)
The number two U.S. pay-radio provider surpassed 3 million subscribers as users signed up for talk-show host Howard Stern's debut with the company Jan. 9.

Changes at PC Magazine (PC via ABC News)
Jim Louderback has been promoted to Editor-in-Chief of PC Magazine and Editorial Director of Ziff Davis's Consumer Technology Group. Former editor Michael J. Miller becomes Chief Content Officer for Ziff Davis Media, overseeing the content of all operations.

Anonymity Granted to Save Sources From Being Made Fun Of (CJR Daily)
In reporting a story in the Times' Sunday Styles Section about how some wealthy Manhattan families are opting to visit two destinations during Winter vacation, Lisa Birnbach agreed not to directly quote the fabulously rich moms and dads who were the subjects of the piece.

NY1 Rose to the Occasion During Transit Strike (Marketwatch)
Jon Friedman: Nimble, quick and analytical, the cable channel offered a lesson to TV news operations everywhere. It outperformed its local TV counterparts and made a mockery of the now-you-see-it-now-you-don't style of coverage of the evening news broadcasts and the 24-hour cable networks.

Seattle Times Ends Pact With Reporter Covering JOA Dispute (Seattle P-I)
The Seattle Times has named one of its own reporters to cover its parent company's dispute with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's owner, ending an unusual arrangement with an outside reporter who has written about the case for the past three years.

Koppel and Brokaw: Clinton Would
Have Gone to Iraq Too
(E&P)

Appearing on Meet the Press, the two broadcast veterans agreed that the press shouldn't be faulted too harshly for not questioning more deeply the claims of WMD in Iraq.

New Creative Director at Disney Channel (B&C)
Disney Channel has named Sharon Ngoi creative director of its marketing team, focusing on preschool programming block Playhouse Disney. Ngoi will head up on-air strategy and creative execution of the brand.

Yahoo to Stream to CBS Shows (TV Week)
Internet site Yahoo TV is streaming commercial-free episodes of two CBS comedies for a week, the first such partnership between the Web company and the broadcaster. The web portal will offer encore episodes from Two and a Half Men and How I Met Your Mother.

Letterman Unrestrained (Fox News)
A judge has lifted a restraining order against CBS late-night host David Letterman, requiring him to keep his distance from Colleen Nestler. According to Nestler, for more than 10 years Letterman has been sending coded messages over the airwaves that communicated his desire to marry her.

Video File-Sharing Goes Mainstream (LAT)
Sharing services for still photos have been on the Web since the late 1990s, but it took longer for the online world to be ready for video. The main obstacle was that video digital files are far larger, requiring much more time to upload and download.

James Packer Takes Over Father's Media Empire in Australia (Bloomberg)
James Packer grew up the son of Australia's richest man, who built a media and casino empire valued at $8.2 billion. With the death of his father Kerry, he takes charge as the family's Publishing & Broadcasting Ltd. seeks to expand in Asia and revive ratings at Australia's most-watched TV station.

Belarus Editor Pushing for Reform (WaPo)
As editor of Student Thought, Iryna Vidanava is responsible for perhaps the most edgy and professional publication left in Belarus, where the government has been ruthlessly shutting down all independent media.

TV's New Glut of Real Estate Shows (WaPo)
These shows "are not really for people that are going to buy and sell a home," says Jeffrey Sconce, associate professor at Northwestern University's screen cultures program. "They're for people who have a fantasy of buying and selling a home."
