You, Too, Can Grace a National Magazine's Cover (NYT)
In its April issue, Wired magazine invited subscribers to upload their photographs to Wired.com. The first 5,000 who did so are now receiving their July issue with themselves as the cover art. Not coincidentally, the editorial theme of the issue is the growing personalization of all things in cyberspace, and the headline over the photo is "You are here."
Stung by Harper's in a Web Of Deceit (WaPo)
Howard Kurtz: As Washington editor of the magazine, Ken Silverstein posed as Kenneth Case, a London-based executive with the fictional Maldon Group, claiming to represent the government of Turkmenistan. He had fake business cards printed, bought a London cellphone number and created a bogus Web site all to persuade Beltway lobbying firms to pitch him on representing Turkmenistan.
'Whale Feces Researcher' Tops PopSci's Worst Jobs in Science (MIN)
There is, pardon the pun, no "waste" in studying whales, because scientists use the dung (that sniffing dogs can then detect on the water's surface) to get evidence for genetics, toxins, and even pregnancy. Believe it or not, there is also a need for a "forensic entomologist" (maggots found on corpses help solve crimes), "deep sewage diver," and "elephant vasectomist."
Film to Bring Hef to the Big Screen (Variety)
Brett Ratner is set to direct Playboy, the Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment film about the life of Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner. Brian Grazer is producing, and John Hoffman is writing the screenplay. Grazer optioned Hefner's life rights several years ago.
Paparazzi Poison (Guardian)
Peter Preston: The most familiar current charge against media coverage speaks only of "dumbing down," but the real difference isn't dumbness: it is cruelty. Claudia Cohen was cruel in her day, but she'd seem like Mother Teresa now.
Media Giants Drawn to India (FT via LAT)
Media companies are stepping up their battle for the Indian children's entertainment market, with Time Warner Inc. teaming with three companies to develop localized animated features in the country. Turner Entertainment Networks Asia, part of the Time Warner group, has signed development contracts with three Indian production houses to make the features, which will be released next year.
