Brazilian Woman Auctions Off Her Virginity ‘For Charity’

Today in Unquestionably Awful PR Stunts: A 20-year-old Brazilian woman named Catarina Migliorini recently went viral with her plans to “auction off” her virginity to the highest bidder. She told various media outlets that the purpose of this tasteless project was “to raise money for impoverished families in her country”—more specifically to fund “a non-governmental organization that will construct modern houses.”

This was news to the auction’s organizer, who told the Huffington Post that “He thought it was for profit and self-promotion.”

Gee, ya think?

The fact that the auction’s organizer is also the director of a documentary film called “Virgins Wanted” that will follow Ms. Migliorini’s every move adds to the general skepticism surrounding her claims—as does the fact that she told local reporters that “I saw this as a business. I have the opportunity to travel, to be part of a movie and get a bonus with it.”

Here’s the kicker: “early bidding quickly topped $190,000.”

Migliorini responded to public criticism by stating that she is not a sex worker:  “If you only do it once in your life then you are not a prostitute, just like if you take one amazing photograph it does not automatically make you a photographer”, adding “The auction is just business, I’m a romantic girl at heart and believe in love.”

Glad we cleared that up.

We can’t claim to be the arbiters of Internet morality, but we have to say it: No matter how she plans to use the money, this little project is very obviously a personal PR stunt—and a disturbing one at that.
