We’d like you to be our play by play announcer and our director of media relations. That’s what the Wilmington Sharks, part of the Coastal Plain League — an independent minor league in the southeast — asked of David Tanklefsky. He gladly accepted.
Tanklefsky left his job as editorial assistant at industry trade publication Broadcasting & Cable to join the Sharks this month.
“My dream has always been to call baseball games,” Tanklefsky told PRNewser. “The other experience will be invaluable.”
In comparing interviewing big television executives for B&C to interviewing minor league players, he said, “TV execs are pretty polished and have their talking points, but these are college kids so I look forward to the opportunity to work with them.”
He also understands the challenges of doing both the play by play and leading PR. “You’re an advocate for the team, but you also want to be objective when you cover the team.”
For now Tanklefsky is familiarizing himself with the league and the players. Since the league operates in markets where they don’t have professional teams, the fans are “gung-ho,” he said.
