According to the findings, 31 percent of respondents will distance themselves from unhealthy people, and 43 percent think that those close to them have the most impact on their health-related lifestyle.
“Health – good and bad — is communicable, and it is the responsibility of every citizen, especially those of us with leadership roles in any sector or industry, to act on this,” said Nancy Turett, global president of Edelman’s health group, in a statement.
For the study, Edelman’s research firm StrategyOne did in-person interviews and polled people online between June 10 and July 26. A total of 15,165 adults over the age of 18 were polled across 12 countries including the U.S., Japan, and Russia.
The study also found that while 62 percent of people tried to change bad habits half failed. Among the reasons for failure identified were enjoyment of the negative habit (30 percent), addiction (20 percent), and delayed benefits from the positive behavior (18 percent). The list of unhealthy behavior includes not exercising, smoking, and sleeplessness.
