Is Foursquare Moving Beyond the ‘Early Adopter’ Phase?

In a 2010 recap infographic posted today, Foursquare announced that more than six million people have signed up for accounts with the location-based site. Some other interesting details:

-There were more than 381.5 million check-ins last year.

-Sometime just after noon and between about 4pm and 6pm are peak times for check ins.

-MTV, Bravo, and the History Channel are among the most popular brand pages.

-New York is a popular place for check-ins, with NYC locations on the top lists for train stations (Penn Station), hotels (Ace Hotel), music venues (Terminal 5 and Mercury Lounge), and food and drink locations (Union Square Greenmarket).

We’ve written about the facts and figures showing that use of location-based apps was still in the “early adopter” phase. Back in November, it was reported that Foursquare had four million users, and co-founder Naveen Selvadurai said it will “probably” have¬† 10 million users by June. Based on these numbers, the site is growing quickly.

Moreover, it was in November when the site hired Kaplow and we asked the question whether the site is growing up.

These numbers indicate that the company is moving beyond the early adopters into more mainstream consumer use, even as people and brands continue to determine the best ways to use it. Indeed, that may be the biggest task for 2011; showing a broader audience the fun and utility of the site.
