Newspaper Publishers’ Arch-Nemesis Is Maine’s Gov. Paul LePage

MaineQuit blaming the economy, newspaper publishers. Stop accusing the Internet, National Newspapers Publishers of America (NNPA). Hey, International News Media Association (INMA), slow down on your blog hate.

Your vitriol should be aimed in one clear direction — Augusta, Maine and the office of Gov. Paul LePage.

He was at a recent GOP rally celebrating the new RNC headquarters in Androscoggin County. Sounds like a happening place, right? I suppose the sauce was flowing as he got a little randy from the lectern and shared that he hates your wretched, ink-stained guts.

As reported by the Bangor Daily News (but paywalls, so click this article from HuffPo), LePage isn’t a big fan of newspapers. In fact, if it weren’t for lining the catbox, he would have no use for them at all.

“The best part of my life is I’ve been hired to work for the people of the state of Maine and I’m very humble and very proud. The worst part of my life is newspapers are still alive — sorry, I had to say it.”

Maine Governor Paul LePageLePage has achieved some acclaim for his wackadoodle parting shots. Two years ago, LePage compared the IRS to the Nazi Gestapo units (for the second time). He has also been known to have a different approach to welfare reform, namely “Get off the couch and get a damn job.” Speaking of the long way around, when LePage was just a Tea Party candidate in 2011, his idea of race relations was to tell the NAACP to “kiss his butt.”

And, after all of that, the guy still gets elected. Who was the opposing candidate?

LePage hasn’t been shy about his dislike of newspapers. In February 2013, he said newspapers were his “greatest fear.” He has also stated he wants to “blow … up” the headquarters of the Portland Press Herald and has boycotted sharing comments with at least three papers in the state.

So much for the editorial board endorsements that he wouldn’t have read anyway.
