Oreo Eying Guinness Record, Lil Wayne Also In the Hunt

The Oreo cookie is trying to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records for the most “likes” accumulated in a 24-hour period.

The effort began this morning and will continue through9 a.m. EST tomorrow, in which time it will have had to gather at least 45,000 “likes” to set the record and become the “World’s ‘Most Liked’ Cookie,” according to the rules.

Update: Lil Wayne might be thwarting Oreo’s efforts! More after the jump.

Oreo already has more than 16 million fans on Facebook, making it the third largest Facebook community. Its fans span across 20 countries and its Facebook page is in three languages.

The record attempt has been teased for about a week on Facebook and Twitter and there’s a media outreach effort under way to get the word out about the record attempt. Also, a spokesperson for the brand tells us they’ve been in contact with resources around the world to motivate consumers on the local level.

Oreo is a Kraft brand working with Weber Shandwick.

Update: Lil Wayne is trying to outdo Oreo. According to Mashable, Lil Wayne is demolishing the 24 hour “likes” challenge, getting more than 100,000 “likes” in one hour. Weezy has a four hour advantage and he started with 20 million Facebook fans.

Mazy Kazerooni, Lil Wayne’s digital manager told Mashable, “I want people to think ‘Bieber, Gaga and Lil Wayne.’ The traffic we do is ridiculous and no one really knows.” We’ve been in touch for a response from the Oreo team.
