Chris Brown, the managing editor for new media at Fox's America's Most Wanted will leave the show to focus on his digital consultancy full time beginning in January. Brown started "Chris Brown TV" after leaving local San Francisco TV station KRON in 2003 and went permanent again with Fox three years ago. He's juggled his freelance work since, consulting to large PR firms Porter Novelli and APCO Worldwide, and on digital strategy for the Washington Times, UPI and the Abundant Forrests Alliance. "There's so much exciting work going on in PR and public affairs, it seems like the right time to make it a full-time occupation," Brown told PRNewser over email. Brown's six person team at Fox ushered AMW from a middle America favorite on the dial, to an integrated media property with a social presence. AMW.com both draws advertisers and helps the relentless John Walsh root out the bad guys. AMW traffic is big among TV show sites, losing only to Dancing with the Stars during November sweeps, ahead of NCIS, The Office, Survivor, and Heroes, Brown said. The online effort serendipitously coincided with the explosion of social networks, and has led to the capture of more than 100 people, including fugitives in Mexico, India and Israel, since he joined in 2007. New York magazine's Amy O'Dell wonders, "...who will handle public relations and deal with sorry bloggers like us now?" PR Execs Among Layoffs at A&E Television NetworksThe merger of A&E Television Networks and Lifetime Entertainment Services will not be without layoffs, as the company eliminated 10% of its workforce - 100 people - this past Friday. Among the layoffs were "two senior PR executives." We hear that the layoffs mostly affected Lifetime, and the network has not responded to PRNewser as of the time of this post. The Dowd Agency, recently acquired by Middleberg Communications, does work with multiple AETN programs, and a source at AETN tells PRNewser that the agency "definitely still works with them," and added there is "no reason that they'd be eliminated." Dowd is hired mostly for project work, the source said. The agency declined to comment to PRNewser and directed media requests to internal PR at AETN. AETN is jointly owned by Disney-ABC and Hearst, who both own a 42.5% stake, and NBC Universal which controls 15.5%. UPDATE: AETN SVP of Corporate Communications Michael Feeney would not comment on specific executives laid off, but did confirm that there were 100 laid off in total. PRNewser has learned that the "two senior PR executives" mentioned in The Hollywood Reporter story are Cindy Ronzoni, Director of Corporate Communications and Online Media Relations and Josh Sabarra, Senior VP, Corporate Communications and Publicity, both at Lifetime. Digg.com PR Head Leaves for AOL, Re-Joins Old Yahoo Boss
Kiersten Hollars, director of communications at social networking site Digg, has left to join AOL. The connection? Hollars was plucked away by her old boss at Yahoo, Brad Garlinghouse. Garlinghouse is now President of Internet and Mobile Communications at AOL. Hollars' new role is senior director of corporate communications, reporting to both Garlinghouse and EVP Corporate Communications Tricia Primrose. "This is more about working with Brad again, and nothing about Digg," Hollars told TechCrunch, who broke the news. This is the second high profile PR hire made by AOL this fall. PRNewser reported exclusively on September 24th that Caroline Campbell joined the company from Porter Novelli. Campbell has ties to AOL CEO Tim Armstrong from their days together at Google. Meanwhile, Digg is looking for a replacement. Critical Media Staffs Up With Former Burelles Luce and dna13 Execs
Broadcast monitoring and intelligence provider Critical Media, Inc. beefed up its management team today, with the addition of executives from Burelles Luce and dna13. Critical Media is most known for its Critical Mention broadcast product, which everyday "digitizes and monetizes more than 15,000 hours of keyword search-able broadcast content from four continents." The company claims that Critical Mention is "utilized by 25 percent of the Fortune 100." UPDATE: The company tells us it counts FedEx, Adobe, IBM, Apple, GE, NBC and agencies Weber Shandwick and Cohn and Wolfe as clients. It competes directly with services offered from VMS and Cision, among others. Steve Shannon joins as VP, Sales & Marketing and was previously with BurrellesLuce for 17 years, most recently served as Executive Vice President overseeing sales, service, marketing and product development. Andrew Koeck joins the company as Director, Strategic Partnerships and previously served as previously served as President and VP Partnerships at dna13 Inc. PR Junkie came across some startling stats from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). A recent survey revealed that 26.5 percent of IABC members have lost their job in the last 12 months. That is up from 10.9% in March and 14.3% in June. The numbers, "provide an indication of just how tough it is at the moment for professional communicators," wrote IABC member Liz Wilson. NY Times Co. On Search for New SVP, Corp. Communications: 'We Are in the Process of Evaluating Candidates'A few weeks ago, we wondered if the search was still on for the open position of SVP Corporate Communications at the New York Times Company, since 12-year veteran Catherine Mathis left in late August for Standard & Poor's. Today the company told us that it is. "...we are in the process of evaluating candidates and have nothing to report as of yet," Abbe Serphos, Director of Public Relations for the New York Times Company told PRNewser via email today. The new hire, if announced soon, could presumably aid the company in PR efforts around potential new approaches to monetizing the Times' website and handling buyouts/layoffs of 100 employees.
