Can ‘Weird Al’ Save Radio Shack? Can Tim and Eric Save Pizza Rolls?

DISCLAIMER: We still have a huge soft spot for “Weird Al” Yankovic. We lost track of him in the 90s, but your editor is not in any way ashamed to admit that he still knows ALL the words to “Fat” and “Eat It” (and most of “Dare to Be Stupid”). “Word Crimes” was the best thing we’ve seen/heard from him in years.

That said, the question posed by Radio Shack‘s choice of Yankovic as its new spokesman is, “How can a fading brand reassert its own relevance?”

Here’s the new ad, created by our friends at Austin agency GSD&M, that launched this morning:

It’s funny, but the ending joke illustrates the problem: when you think of Radio Shack, what do you think of beyond batteries? Cords? Earbuds? iPhone cases?

Spin the Agencies of Record

WhaleShark Media, which says it’s the largest online coupon and deals site around, has chosen Allison+Partners to promote the company’s RetailMeNot brand and its corporate comms program. GSD&M was chosen as the company’s ad agency. Both were selected after a competitive review.

Incapital, an underwriter and distributor of various financial products, has chosen CJP Communications as its AOR. The company is looking for greater brand awareness as it adds staff and expands across North America. Work will include media relations, thought leadership, and executive visibility efforts.

L.L. Bean Chooses Weber Shandwick

L.L. Bean has chosen Weber Shandwick for its centennial anniversary campaign, launching January 2012. The work will include events, social media, cause marketing (looks like environmental issues will be play a big role here), retail activities, and collaboration with L.L. Bean’s advertising agency GSD&M in Austin, TX.

Weber’s Boston office will take the lead on this account with support from New York and Chicago.
